TEACHER-NATURALIST, Full Time
Weis Ecology Center
150 Snake Den Road, Ringwood, NJ

The teacher-naturalist has duties primarily in the education branch of the NJAS mission.  In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, this position requires taking an active role in promoting New Jersey Audubon Society as a membership-based conservation organization.  Weis Ecology Center is a day use and residential facility.  Supervisor:  Weis Ecology Center Director

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and coordinating environmental education day and overnight programs and live animal programs for students, scouts, families, and adults in addition to developing new educational programs, curricula, public programs and partnering on NJAS projects.
  • Supervising, scheduling, and training of educational staff and volunteers.
  • Compiling and distributing Weis’ quarterly calendar of events
  • Coordinating care and feeding schedule of live animals, monitors health, completes reports & permit applications, and secures food donations for Weis’ raptors and reptiles.
  • Supporting the day-to-day operations of the center including daily procedures, public relations and greeting hikers, office tasks and answering phones, routine cleaning/maintenance, and additional duties as required by the Sanctuary Director.
  • Organizing the operation of a small nature store, including meeting volunteer staffing needs.

Qualifications:

  • BA in environmental education, environmental science, biological science, or related field. 
  • Teaching experience at a residential environmental education center or nature center, along with a willingness to work flexible hours (including weekends and some nights). 
  • Demonstrated natural history knowledge, as well as strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent leadership, motivational, and organizational skills required. 
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Professional including PowerPoint, Excel and Access. 
  • Retail experience a plus

Starting Date:  Immediate

Position: Migration Counter for Morning Flight Project

Job Description: 2009 MIGRATION COUNTER for Morning Flight fall migration monitoring project at New Jersey Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory, Cape May, NJ from 16 August to October 31.  Cape May is renowned as one of the world's great hot spots for bird migration.  NJAS fosters the application of sound scientific principles and practices to address conservation issues related to vertebrate and invertebrate fauna, and the natural habitats with which they are associated. 

Location: Higbee Beach Morning Flight monitoring site, Cape May, NJ.  Report directly to Vince Elia. 

Duties:
* Identify and count migrating landbirds, mostly passerines, engaged in re-directed flight from 15 minutes before sunrise through 4 hours after sunrise.
* Maintain daily data sheets with appropriate weather and migration data.  Enter data regularly on MS Excel computer spreadsheet.
* Keep appropriate records for rare sightings

     
Qualifications:
• This position requires a high degree of birding skill, as migrants are counted as they pass in flight, sometimes at distance and/or in large numbers.  Ability to quickly identify landbirds, mostly passerines, in flight by sight and sound is essential.  
•     An enthusiastic and motivated self-starter who is also a strong team player
•     Willingness to work early hours under sometimes difficult field conditions
•     Applicants should have experience interacting with the public and excellent interpersonal skills.
•      Careful data collecting skills a must.
•     All applicants must have their own vehicles.

Start Date:        16 August, 2009. A September 1 start date may be possible.

Location: Will work at the either the Cape May Hawkwatch  or Avalon Seawatch in Cape May, NJ.  Report directly to Vince Elia.

* Maintain daily data sheets with appropriate weather and migration data collections
* Keep appropriate records for rare sightings

Position: Interpretive Naturalist Interns (4 positions)

Location: Will work either at the Cape May Hawkwatch, Avalon Seawatch, or on the Passerine Morning Flight Project in Cape May, NJ.  Report directly to Don Freiday, Director of Birding Programs, Cape May Bird Observatory, NJAS. 

Duties:
* Orienting and assisting visitors to the Cape May Migration Count Sites. Over 500 people may visit per day during peak times.
* Conducting mini-workshops on bird i.d. and migration phenomena.
* Assisting visitors with bird identification, and assisting counters when needed.
* Maintaining records of visitor contacts.
     
Qualifications:
•     Applicants should have experience interacting with the public and excellent interpersonal skills.  
•     An enthusiastic and motivated self-starter who is also a strong team player.
•     Willingness to work long hours under sometimes difficult field conditions.
•     Familiarity with bird migration and birding.  Experience identifying raptors, passerines, and/or sea birds in flight is a plus, but learning on the job is possible and we will provide training and support.
•     All applicants must have their own vehicles unless other arrangements are made prior to employment.

Duties:
* Daily road censuses of migrating Monarchs
* Monarch tagging
* Data entry
* Educating the public about the project and Monarch biology

Director of Major and Planned Gifts

Job Description:
New Jersey Audubon Society (NJAS), a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the preservation of wildlife and the natural environment, is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as Director of Major and Planned Gifts.  This position is an outstanding career opportunity for a passionate development professional to embrace the Society’s mission, develop and manage a diverse portfolio of prospects, and build a robust major gift and planned giving program into a core component of the society’s philanthropic activity to advance the society’s conservation, research and environmental education initiatives. 

The Director of Major and Planned Gifts will work out of the society’s headquarters facility located in Bernardsville, NJ.  Duties include strategic and operational planning, prospect management, donor cultivation, solicitation, and coordinating with other NJAS staff and volunteers to sustain and increase overall fund raising effectiveness in the areas of major and planned giving.  The position requires the willingness and ability to travel statewide as needed and willing to occasionally work some evenings and weekends when necessary. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops and builds a major gifts program from a strong membership base.  Manages staff and board personnel involved in all aspects of identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gift and planned giving prospects.
  • Responsible for developing both long and short-range operational plans to strengthen and grow the major gifts and planned giving programs.
  • Develops and executes a plan for marketing NJAS as a worthy beneficiary of legacy gifts and identifies prospects for planned giving.
  • Assists in the creation of a Planned Giving Advisory Committee and works to promote the Society’s Charitable Gift Annuity Program and other planned giving strategies. Creates CGA illustrations and contracts for prospective donors.
  • Works closely with the Development Associate for annual giving and membership programs, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, other development staff and key programmatic staff to plan targeted outreach activities aimed at increasing the donor pool and cultivating/stewarding existing prospects.
  • As one of the senior managers in the Development Office, works closely with the Vice President for Development in responding to strategic institutional priorities by planning, setting, and monitoring annual goals aimed at supporting those priorities.
  • Cultivates, solicits and stewards prospects through personal visits and written and oral communications.
  • Plans and implements “moves management” strategies for identification, cultivation, timely solicitation and stewardship of prospects at the $1,000+ level to increase their level of support; develops solicitation priorities and donor/prospect visitation schedules for the President, staff and volunteer board members.  Accompanies the President and/or key individuals on donor visits where appropriate.
  • Provides strategies, briefing materials, written proposals and acknowledgements for the President, Vice President for Development and members of the NJAS Board of Directors and accompanies them as appropriate on development-related travel.
  • Provides staff support when appropriate for committees that are active in capital and endowment fund raising. Trains and oversees interaction with these volunteers.
  • Participates in development outreach activities as appropriate.
  • Serves as a member of the NJAS Board Development Committee

Minimum Qualifications:

Over five years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, with at least three years experience working with major giving and planned giving programs.  A demonstrable track record of fund-raising accomplishments is essential, including experience in building a major gifts program into a core component of philanthropic activity.  Must have experience closing major and planned gifts from individuals, a working knowledge of all planned giving vehicles and prior experience with Charitable Gift Annuity Programs is essential.  College degree highly preferred.

Knowledge/Skills:

Strong written and oral communication skills. Effective time-management skills. Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work successfully with colleagues, donors, administrators, and volunteers.  Must be a facilitator with excellent management skills and results-oriented. Highly developed ability to work independently within a strong teamwork philosophy as well as collaboratively with colleagues to achieve common goals.

Strong computer skills and a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.  Raiser’s Edge database experience preferred.  Detail oriented with respect to planning, file analysis and record keeping is essential.  Skilled in prospect management and prospect research.

Informed and committed to the role that environmental education, conservation and research plays in our society today and its importance for the future.  Comfortable working in a dynamic environment; adaptable to change. Flexible in working hours, ability and willingness to travel statewide.  Confident, professional, energetic, enthusiastic, self-motivated, and absolutely ethical.  A “people person” who is genuinely interested in others and an active listener.  Knowledgeable about a broad range of interests and having the ability to comfortably converse on many subjects.

Responsibilities:  Environmental educators report to the Program Director and are primarily responsible for conducting environmental education programs and interpretive walks for students, scouts, day camp participants, families, and adults.  Environmental educators are also responsible     for planning and conducting activities for special events, leading public programs and field trips, assisting in the care of our snakes and raptors, writing press releases, contributing to the Center’s calendar of events, office tasks, routine maintenance, and additional duties as required by the Program Director and/or Sanctuary Director.  Environmental educators will be responsible for completing one special project during the twelve-month period.  Opportunities exist for enthusiastic individuals to develop curriculum and possibly research, write, and broadcast radio programs.

Position Commitment:  November 15, 2008 through August 31, 2009.

Qualifications:  Baccalaureate degree or advanced degree students.  Interested applicants must be willing to work and live in a residential/nature center setting and be willing to work flexible hours on occasion.  Teaching experience preferred.

Total Package Value:  $17,000

Remuneration:  Private room on the property (required), utilities, laundry facilities, 12 paid comp days, and $9,600 salary ($800 per month) for the full 12-month period, paid on the 15th and 30th of each month.

Environmental Education Internship or Co-op
Weis Ecology Center

Responsibilities:  Co-op students report to the Program Director and are primarily responsible for observing and possibly conducting environmental education programs and interpretive walks for students, scouts, day camp participants, families, and adults.  Students might also have responsibilities for assisting with the planning and implementation of activities for special events and weekend public programs.  All staff will be responsible for completing some office tasks, routine maintenance, and additional duties as required by the Program Director and/or the Sanctuary Director.  Opportunities also exist for enthusiastic individuals to develop curriculum and research, write, and broadcast radio programs.

Positions Available:  Fall semester, spring semester, or summer months.

Qualifications:  Upper level baccalaureate degree candidates or advanced degree students.  Interested applicants must be willing to work (and possibly live) in a nature center/residential setting and be willing to work flexible hours on occasion.  To earn credit, co-op students can work with their advisor or Department Head at their college or university to establish the co-op requirements to be met.

Remuneration:  Possibility of a private room (on the property) if needed.
