Habitat Restoration Grounds Assistant

General Description

New Jersey Audubon Society’s Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Bernardsville is seeking a part time/seasonal employee to assist with the restoration of forest and meadow wildlife habitats and general grounds maintenance.  Restoration involves the removal of non-native, invasive species of plants and replacement with native plants.  Grounds maintenance involves lawn mowing, weed wacking and other basic outdoor responsibilities.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Removal of undesirable plants including multi-flora rose, Japanese barberry and Oriental bittersweet using hand tools.
  • Planting of native trees, shrubs and other plants using hand tools.
  • Assisting sanctuary personnel in the supervision of volunteers with above.
  • Occasional use of power tools including lawn mowers and weed wackers.
  • Occasional participation in sanctuary research activities.
  • Maintain appropriate records, as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in gardening, landscaping or habitat restoration desirable.
  • Demonstrated interest in conservation.
  • Knowledge of invasive and native plants a plus.
  • Ability to work independently following a short period of initial training.
  • Minimum age is 18.

This is a part-time/seasonal position.  Starting immediately, end date to be determined.  Hours are flexible/approximately 20 to 25 hours per week.

Salary:  $12 hr depending on experience.

Retail Sales Associate / Naturalist
(full time part-time - 4 days/week)

NJ Audubon Society's Cape May Bird Observatory Northwood  Center in Cape May Point, NJ is seeking a Retail Sales Associate / Naturalist to assist the Sales Manager in our nature shop, four days/week (32 hours) including weekends.  Excellent customer service, communication skills, retail sales, and computer skills required.  Knowledge of local natural history a plus.   

Duties include:

Encourage membership enrollment. Welcome visitors, answer telephones, and disseminate NJAS/CMBO information, answer questions about local natural areas and natural history.

  • Assist customers with merchandise and sales.
  • Process sales and maintain accurate sales records.
  • Prepare daily reconciliations.
  • Assist with ordering, processing, pricing and display of merchandise.
  • Assist with processing of store accounting procedures.
  • Maintain inventory database.
  • Assist in bi-annual store inventory.
  • Create and maintain seasonal natural history education exhibits at center.
  • Assist Sales Manager with offsite sales during special events.
  • Train and coordinate store volunteer corps and encourage new volunteers.
  • Maintain supply and restock of literature for center (membership brochures, checklists, info packs, etc.) to ensure ample supply available.
  • Help with general light maintenance of store and grounds, including breaking down of cardboard, taking out trash & recycling, filling bird feeders, cleaning up, etc.

Starting date: Immediately

MIGRATION COUNTERS (3) for fall migration monitoring projects at Cape May Bird Observatory, Cape May, NJ.  Cape May is one of the best fall migration hot spots in the country.  Specifically, we are hiring a counter for the Cape May Hawkwatch (1 Sep - 30 Nov), a counter for the Avalon Seawatch (22 Sep-22 Dec), and a "swing" counter (1 Sep- 22 Dec), who will provide day-off relief at each site and enter data.  Applicants for counter positions should have a strong background identifying either raptors or seabirds in flight.  Careful data collecting skills, a willingness to work long hours, and excellent interpersonal skills are a must.  Applicants for the "swing" counter position also should have some experience with MS Excel.  All applicants must have their own vehicles.  Salary for all positions 1400-1600/month depending on experience. 12-Month Environmental Educator
at New Jersey Audubon Society’s Weis Ecology Center

Responsibilities:  Environmental educators report to the Program Director and are primarily responsible for conducting environmental education programs and interpretive walks for students, scouts, day camp participants, families, and adults.  Environmental educators are also responsible     for planning and conducting activities for special events, leading public programs and field trips, assisting in the care of our snakes and raptors, writing press releases, contributing to the Center’s calendar of events, office tasks, routine maintenance, and additional duties as required by the Program Director and/or Sanctuary Director.  Environmental educators will be responsible for completing one special project during the twelve-month period.  Opportunities exists for enthusiastic individuals to develop curriculum and possibly research, write, and broadcast radio programs.

Position Commitment:  September 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008.

Qualifications:  Baccalaureate degree or advanced degree students.  Interested applicants must be willing to work and live in a residential/nature center setting and be willing to work flexible hours on occasion.  Teaching experience preferred.

         Total Package Value:  $19,200

Remuneration:  Private room on the property (required), utilities, laundry facilities, 12 paid comp days, and $800 per month through August 31st , paid on the 15th and 30th of each month.

Environmental Education Assistant Internship or Co-op
Lorrimer Nature Sanctuary

Responsibilities: EE AssistantsInternship and co-op students work under the supervision of the Senior Teacher-Naturalist at the Lorrimer Nature Sanctuary in Franklin Lakes, NJ.  Duties include:

  • Observe and conduct environmental education programs for students, scouts, day campers, families, and adults.
  • Actively promote Lorrimer’s programs through a variety of means including NJAS magazine, website, community advertising, and press releases.
  • Observe and conduct environmental education programs for students, scouts, day campers, families, and adults.
  • Interact with visitors to the center and gift shop.
  • Assist with animal care.
  • Design and maintain indoor and outdoor exhibits
  • Carry out administrative duties, office tasks, and routine maintenance.

Positions available:  Fall semester, spring semester, or summer months.

Qualifications:  NJAS seeks experienced self-motivated individual with excellent organizational skills, the ability to multi-task, and the ability to be effective with minimal supervision.  Interested applicants must be willing to work in a nature center setting and be willing to work flexible hours on occasion. Individual should have a working knowledge of New Jersey’s natural history, good writing and communication skills, and the ability to effectively interact with visitors to the center. Upper level baccalaureate degree candidates or advanced degree students.  Interested applicants must be willing to work in a nature center setting and be willing to work flexible hours on occasion.  To earn credit, co-op students can work with their advisor or department head at the college to establish the co-op requirements to be met.
