Project Administrator: NJ Birding and Wildlife Trails

Job Description:

Working with the NJ Audubon Society’s Director of Birding and Wildlife Trails, the part-time (up to 24 hours per week) Project Administrator will assist in the development and implementation of birding and wildlife-viewing trail publications in the NJ Pinelands counties of Atlantic, Gloucester, Camden and Burlington.  NJAS fosters environmental awareness and a conservation ethic among New Jersey's citizens; protects New Jersey's birds, mammals, other animals, and plants, especially endangered and threatened species; and promotes preservation of New Jersey's valuable natural habitats. 

About NJ Birding and Wildlife Trails (BWTs):  NJAS has been awarded funding and project coordination responsibilities for a concerted effort to develop products that promote wildlife viewing locations in New Jersey.  The project is being undertaken in collaboration with various state and local agencies, and requires strict adherence to deadlines.  Visit the website www.njwildlifetrails.org for more information.

Location and Duration: This 16-18 month position will begin February 1, 2009 and will be located at our Center for Research and Education in Cape May Court House, NJ.  

Duties:

  • Assist the Director and Project Manager as needed in communications with various constituencies, especially project partners, public officials, citizens, naturalists and representatives of the media.

  • Data entry of contact information and site assessment information.

  • Edit and proof copy such as site descriptions and trail overviews.

  • Work with the NJAS Webmaster to build up and improve BWT Program website and utilize web-based information dissemination tools.

  • Implement marketing and promotional programs, including telephone marketing.

  • Promote local stakeholder meetings.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of economic and user satisfaction assessment tools.

  • Manage stages of publication development, such as proofing, document printing, distribution, and marketing with major partners and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Work within proprietary MS Access database, entering contact and trail guide information

  • Other duties as assigned by Project Director.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in a variety of standard office software programs, including Microsoft Office Professional. Familiarity with MS Access database required.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated initiative and a positive attitude.

  • A motivated self-starter who is also a strong team player.

  • Punctual and dependable.

  • Ability to handle complex projects with a variety of partners.

  • Excellent writing and speaking skills essential.

  • Publication development and production experience a plus.

  • GPS experience a plus.

Position may require occasional travel and limited work on weekends and nights.  This requires a reliable vehicle and the ability to obtain a valid New Jersey Driver’s License.

Starting Date: February 1, 2009

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience.

TEACHER-NATURALIST, Full Time
New Jersey Audubon Society (NJAS) Plainsboro Preserve

The teacher-naturalist has duties primarily in the education branch of the NJAS mission.  In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed, this position requires taking an active role in promoting New Jersey Audubon Society as a membership-based conservation organization.  Supervisor:  Plainsboro Preserve Sanctuary Director

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach, plan, develop, and schedule natural history programs for schools, special interest groups, nature camps, the general public, and family programs.
  • Carry out administrative duties including program registration, sending out follow-up materials and supply purchases. 
  • Care, feeding, and well being of our live animals that are presented for educational purposes. 
  • Assist with the design and maintenance of exhibits. 
  • Promote NJAS and Plainsboro Preserve programs by preparing flyers to post.  Preparing press releases in a timely fashion.
  • Representing NJAS to the general public and to members at conferences, nature fairs and other gatherings.  
  • Assist Sanctuary Director with the training and supervision of volunteer staff involved in education or public interface.
  • Interact with visitors to the center through answering inquiries about the natural world and NJAS, as well as aiding in the retail operations of the Center. 
  • Help with care and maintenance of the grounds, gardens, and trail system as needed. 
  • Interact with other New Jersey Audubon staff to promote statewide education initiatives.
  • Network with local organizations to promote the mission of New Jersey Audubon Society.  

In addition the above, the Teacher-Naturalist will work with other staff on all projects or tasks necessary for the good order of the facility.

Qualifications:

  • Natural history knowledge of New Jersey habitats and teaching experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Writing samples required on application.
  • Spirit of cooperation and teamwork.
  • Punctual and professional with good time management skills.
  • Basic computer literacy in PC programs.
  • Interpersonal skills. 
  • Able to take ownership for areas of responsibility and demonstrate initiative.
  • Able to accept direction and constructive criticism.
  • B.A. or B.S. in the sciences or education, preferred.

10-Month Environmental Educator Position
at New Jersey Audubon Society’s Weis Ecology Center

Responsibilities:  Environmental educators report to the Program Director and are primarily responsible for conducting environmental education programs and interpretive walks for students, scouts, day camp participants, families, and adults.  Environmental educators are also responsible     for planning and conducting activities for special events, leading public programs and field trips, assisting in the care of our snakes and raptors, writing press releases, contributing to the Center’s calendar of events, office tasks, routine maintenance, and additional duties as required by the Program Director and/or Sanctuary Director.  Environmental educators will be responsible for completing one special project during the twelve-month period.  Opportunities exist for enthusiastic individuals to develop curriculum and possibly research, write, and broadcast radio programs.

Position Commitment:  November 15, 2008 through August 31, 2009.

Qualifications:  Baccalaureate degree or advanced degree students.  Interested applicants must be willing to work and live in a residential/nature center setting and be willing to work flexible hours on occasion.  Teaching experience preferred.

Total Package Value:  $17,000

Remuneration:  Private room on the property (required), utilities, laundry facilities, 12 paid comp days, and $9,600 salary ($800 per month) for the full 12-month period, paid on the 15th and 30th of each month.

Environmental Education Assistant Internship or Co-op
Lorrimer Nature Sanctuary

Responsibilities: EE AssistantsInternship and co-op students work under the supervision of the Senior Teacher-Naturalist at the Lorrimer Nature Sanctuary in Franklin Lakes, NJ.  Duties include:

  • Observe and conduct environmental education programs for students, scouts, day campers, families, and adults.
  • Actively promote Lorrimer’s programs through a variety of means including NJAS magazine, website, community advertising, and press releases.
  • Observe and conduct environmental education programs for students, scouts, day campers, families, and adults.
  • Interact with visitors to the center and gift shop.
  • Assist with animal care.
  • Design and maintain indoor and outdoor exhibits
  • Carry out administrative duties, office tasks, and routine maintenance.

Positions available:  Fall semester, spring semester, or summer months.

Qualifications:  NJAS seeks experienced self-motivated individual with excellent organizational skills, the ability to multi-task, and the ability to be effective with minimal supervision.  Interested applicants must be willing to work in a nature center setting and be willing to work flexible hours on occasion. Individual should have a working knowledge of New Jersey’s natural history, good writing and communication skills, and the ability to effectively interact with visitors to the center. Upper level baccalaureate degree candidates or advanced degree students.  Interested applicants must be willing to work in a nature center setting and be willing to work flexible hours on occasion.  To earn credit, co-op students can work with their advisor or department head at the college to establish the co-op requirements to be met.

Responsibilities:  Co-op students report to the Program Director and are primarily responsible for observing and possibly conducting environmental education programs and interpretive walks for students, scouts, day camp participants, families, and adults.  Students might also have responsibilities for assisting with the planning and implementation of activities for special events and weekend public programs.  All staff will be responsible for completing some office tasks, routine maintenance, and additional duties as required by the Program Director and/or the Sanctuary Director.  Opportunities also exist for enthusiastic individuals to develop curriculum and research, write, and broadcast radio programs.

Positions Available:  Fall semester, spring semester, or summer months.

Qualifications:  Upper level baccalaureate degree candidates or advanced degree students.  Interested applicants must be willing to work (and possibly live) in a nature center/residential setting and be willing to work flexible hours on occasion.  To earn credit, co-op students can work with their advisor or Department Head at their college or university to establish the co-op requirements to be met.

Remuneration:  Possibility of a private room (on the property) if needed.
