Plantings beneficial to butterflies, hummingbirds, and
fruit-eating birds are difficult to find. The Cape May Bird
Observatory (CMBO) Center for Research & Education in Goshen,
NJ, sells nectar plants, caterpillar food plants, and fruit- and
seed-bearing native trees and shrubs. Plant selection changes
throughout the season, so stop by often.
Plants offered for sale have been grown for CMBO by Flora For
Fauna, a local nursery specializing in habitat gardens. Many
native species are offered. Natives have been nursery propagated
by seeds and cuttings from plant populations maintained for that
purpose. No plant offered for sale has been collected from the
wild.
Plants are labeled with their wildlife value (nectar for
butterflies and / or hummingbirds, fruits for birds, foliage for
butterfly and / or moth caterpillars, or some combination of
these values), as well as the plant's needs (moist / dry soil,
sun/shade, zone, etc.) and bloom / fruit time, color, height,
etc.
