This quarterly of the New Jersey Audubon Society publishes articles on status, distribution and populations of New Jersey Birds, and compiles in each issue observations on birds from each of five regions, called regional Field Notes. The information is of interest to recreational birders, professionals, consultants, planners and government agency officials, and is useful for conservation of habitat and research projects.  New Jersey Birds is only available as a PDF download from this site, not as a printed publication.  Active birders contribute quarterly to the regional editors in each of the five regions. Numbers and dates of common and rare species and endangered species are reported. Deadlines and instructions for submission of articles appear below.  For very rare species, a description should be provided.  Photos are welcome.  (Click here for more information about photo and video submissions.)

If possible, please submit manuscripts on 3.5" disks, including a printed copy, double-spaced. DOS users: Word-Perfect or MS Word files need no special preparation but please use a HD (2MB) disk. If unsure about compatibility, please save as an ASCII or text file. Mac users: please save as an MS Word- or WordPerfect-compatible file. Modem transfers are also possible. Manuscripts not on disk should be double-spaced and typed or printed in the highest quality available on your printer whenever possible.

For regional field notes: Deadlines for submitting bird records to the New Jersey Audubon regional editors are : Spring (March - May), June 15; Summer (June - August), September 15; Fall (September - November), December 15; Winter (December - February ), March 15. Records in field card order make it easier on the regional editor. A copy of the regional editors' columns goes to American Birds' regional editors.

Photo and Video Contributions

Records of New Jersey Birds always is interested in receiving photos of birds of interest for possible publication. It is best to send photos to the regional editors, although they may also be sent directly to the editor. If possible, contacting us before you send original slides or prints through the mail is a good thing to do. Also, editor Lehman's computer may have problems with large file sizes, and thus a "heads-up" that you wish to send such a file is needed in case alternate methods of delivery are needed.

All photographers of material used receive credit in the magazine, as well as our behind-the-scenes unbridled gratitude. Be sure to include your name, address, and information on species, location, and date with all your submissions. If you submit slides or prints and would like them back, let us know at the time. Otherwise the material will be placed in the NJB or NJBRC photo files.

With more and more birders using various digital photography formats, a little clarification of what is needed for print publication seems appropriate. In general, much higher photo resolution is needed for good print quality than for on-screen viewing on a monitor. RNJB's usual requirement for photos is 300dpi; however, digital formats, particularly video, rarely furnish such high resolution. Please provide the highest resolution you can when sending the regional editors or editor Lehman digital photo files, and note that digital photos will seldom be enlarged in the magazine. Best results are obtained when digital photos are printed at their original size. If you feel you have a good-quality print of your digital photo, send that along with your digital file, as a scan of the print can turn out better than the low-resolution photo file.

When sending digital photos, it is best to send the "raw" file, without any manipulation, because some manipulations reduce the original data, which can downgrade the final print quality. If you have performed extensive work on a digital photo, it is probably better to send your best print to scan.
