World Series of Birding Barkley Family Big Stay

Ron, Ben, and Dan Barkley, AKA the “Deckcissels,” have conducted “Big Stays” on the rooftop observation deck of the Hoffman Center since 2010, when they finished in first place for the “Big Stay” category for the WSB event with a total of 80 species. Ron and Dan will lead the team this year. Pledges to their efforts will support education programs at the Hoffman Center. Please call 908-396-6386 for registration information.

World Series of Birding: Scherman Hoffman and Great Swamp Century Run

Led by Randy Little, Associate Naturalist NJ Audubon past board member, author of For the Birds (a history of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology) and a master at recording bird songs for the “Lab of Ornithology,” Randy Little has been leading the Sanctuary and Great Swamp Century Run since 1988. As a leader, there is no better guide than Randy to help learn the intricacies of bird songs during migration. With a special use permit from the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, we will have access to the off-limits management area of the refuge. Our record of 102 was set in 2002 by Randy and co-leader Neil Collins. Limit 25. Please call 908-396-6386 for registration information.

Led by Scott Barnes, Linda Mack, & Carole Hughes Join Scott Barnes and associate naturalists Linda Mack, & Carole Hughes for a full day’s birding at Sandy Hook. The hook is one of the best migrant traps in the state, and should produce a wide range of thrushes, vireos, flycatchers, and warblers; we’ll spend the entire day exploring Sandy Hook’s wide range of habitats and birds. After landbirding slows down, we’ll search for waterfowl, herons, egrets, shorebirds, and raptors. Be prepared for extensive walking including on soft sand.  Participants are expected to pledge a minimum of $1 per species; we normally record 120+ species for the day. Led by Mike Mandracchia START TIME MAY VARY: Saturday May 9 (6:00 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.)  Confirm with leader Easy birding around the dikes at one of the state’s best birding locations. The woods and wetlands of “Brig” make this an excellent spot to strive for 100+ species on the World Series, including a variety of waterfowl, wading birds, rails, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds. The day will culminative with a dusk look/listen for Chuck-wills-widow, Eastern Whip-poor-will, and other nocturnal species.  Come join us at (Brig) NWR at 6:00 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. To join us for the day a donation of $100 or more per person going to NJ Audubon’s All Things Birds Program is required.
