Join CMBO naturalists for this 2-hour walk around the Cape May Point State Park and beyond! Not watching birds when in Cape May is like not visiting the Grand Canyon when in Arizona! Join us for a relaxed morning of birding whether you are a seasoned birder or have never really watched birds on purpose before PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED COST: $6 members, $10 nonmembers. Be sure to check the forecast in advance and dress in layers appropriate for prevailing weather conditions. The weather in Cape May can differ considerably from nearby inland areas and may be warmer, colder, or windier so it’s best to be over prepared. We may have to bird in the rain, so please bring your rain gear. TRANSPORTATION: We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Hilltop Reservation Birding Walk

With Dave Hall. This is a great time to view nesting birds such as Indigo Buntings and House Wrens. We will also explore the restored meadow habitat for Bluebirds as well as butterflies and other insects. Explore edge and meadow habitats for midsummer birds with an easy walk through the reservation. Meet at Mountain Avenue and Courter Lane, North Caldwell, NJ 07006 The Hilltop Reservation is a nature preserve located on the Second Watchung Mountain. It is composed of lands formerly included in the grounds of the Essex County Hospital Center. The land was designated a Conservation Easement in 2001, by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, permanently dedicating it for conservation and recreation purposes, and thereby protecting it from any future development. Help pull our seine net through the Cape May Harbor and see first hand what creatures inhabit the waters. Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of Cape May Harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, and about the fascinating and ancient Horseshoe Crab. A great family outing! Pre-registration is required. COST: $10 adults, $5 children ages 3-12, children under 3 free. Limited to groups of up to 20 participants during this time. Children may not participate without an adult. Contact us at 609.427.3045 for private group tours and rates. INFORMATION: Meet 5-10 minutes prior to your program time at the picnic tables in front of the Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over rocky and sandy area. Please bring necessary footwear, sun screen, bug spray, water bottle, and other belongings with you that you may need. Restrooms will be available to the public 30 minutes before and after the program. Spend the evening learning about, observing, and catching lightning bugs at Lorrimer Sanctuary! Whether you call them lightning bugs or fireflies—we all recognize the sense of joy that these critters bring us! Pack a picnic blanket and your sense of wonder as we encounter lightning bugs at Lorrimer Sanctuary and dive deeper into their unique ecology. Participants will engage in a community science program called Firefly Watch and will leave empowered to identify species of fireflies in their own yard. Meet a Nature Center Naturalist on the beach for an hour of ghost crab hunting! Learn about ghost crab habitat, how they move, and what they eat. Do you think you can catch one? Discover what other creatures are on the beach at night. Pre-registration required. WHERE: Meet at the end of Mount Vernon Avenue near the end of the Promenade in Cape May. WHEN: Thursday evenings. 8:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. WHO CAN JOIN?: A wonderful family program! Children may not participate without an adult. EQUIPMENT NEEDED: We will provide at least 1 "Ghost Crab Catcher 5000" Flashlights (Cell phone flashlights work too!)
