Birding Cape May Point

Join CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. So let us add some joy to your winter – join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding around Cape May Point. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:  We bird in all weather. Be sure to check the forecast in advance and dress in layers appropriate for prevailing weather conditions. The weather in Cape May can differ considerably from nearby inland areas and may be warmer, colder, or windier so it’s best to be over prepared. We may have to bird in the rain, so please bring your rain gear. TRANSPORTATION: We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over jetties. Riker Hill & Becker Farm Birding Walk

Explore both field and forest while enjoying beautiful vistas of the Passaic River Valley. Walk thought old farm fields to discover overwintering field birds. Hike along the ridge at Riker Hill for great views and a look at woodland birds. Meet at the Essex County Environmental Center and we will carpool to the hiking site. Led by associate naturalist Dave Hall. Becker Farm dates back to 1880 when it was a farm. Over the years this farm added its famous railroad which entertained families for over 30 years. The now abandoned farm is a great place to spot grassland birds. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED COST: $10 members, $15 nonmembers. REGISTER HERE

Harlequins & other sea ducks; plus, loons and gannets. We'll visit some nearby bayside spots after birding the inlet for additional species. Early winter birding for Harlequin Ducks, eiders, and scoters. In some years seabird migration is still underway, and we may also see many gulls, loons and gannets. The beaches may host Horned Larks, Am. Pipits, and/or Snow Buntings. After birding the lighthouse/inlet area, we'll caravan to nearby bayside spots for more species. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, lunch, and dress warmly! Led by Scott Barnes & Linda Mack. LOCATION: Meet in the main parking lot of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. Led by Kristin Mylecraine, Yoga Teacher. Yoga is a great way to relax, connect with yourself, and increase flexibility and strength. Explore the connections between yoga and nature in this 75-minute class. No experience necessary; all levels welcome. For ages 15 years and older. Preregistration is required.  Ticket sales end at 4:30 PM on the Friday before each class. You must pre-register, walk-ins will not be allowed to participate. We are offering an in-person class at the sanctuary and a virtual class online simultaneously. The in-person class has a limit of 10 people. Be sure to purchase the correct ticket. Learn how to ID native tree species in winter by looking at the 3 "B's" - buds, bark, and branches! Join a Lorrimer Sanctuary naturalist for a brief hike as we talk about the native tree species that provide food and shelter for wildlife, as well as how to ID them after their leaves have fallen. We will focus on learning to identify the 3 “B’s” – Buds, Bark, and Branches! Bundle up! This class will be held entirely outdoors.
