Learn the art of fishing at Fishing Basics: get hands-on experience, expert tips, and have a reel-y great time! Join us for a fun-filled day of fishing basics! Whether you're a beginner or just want to brush up on your skills, this in-person event is perfect for you. Our experienced instructors will cover everything from casting techniques to knot tying. You'll also learn about bait selection and fish identification. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow fishing enthusiasts and enjoy the great outdoors. So, grab your friends and family and get ready for a day of reeling in some unforgettable memories! AND you'll get the chance to try your luck at fishing! Rods and tackle will be available to share, but you are welcome to bring your own. This program is geared for children 5th grade + and adults. Join a Lorrimer Sanctuary Teacher Naturalist for a guided nature walk through our forest. Topics vary by session. Walk on the wild side with Lorrimer this fall as we check out our forest throughout the season. Join our Teacher Naturalist, Mr. Mike for four unique experiences at Lorrimer Sanctuary as the forest transforms throughout fall and into winter. Come for one class or come for them all. This is an all-ages program so bring your curiosity and dress appropriately, this program takes place entirely outdoors. Join Lorrimer Sanctuary for a Nature Tech Walk where we will be investigating our natural world using phone apps like iNaturalist, Seek, and Merlin to identify the birds, plants, and animals around us! Technology isn't so bad when you can use it to better your identification skills, sharpen your nature photography, keep track of your life list, or tune your ear to special bird call. We will be focusing on iNaturalist, Seek and Merlin for this program. This walk is intended for adults or families. Please bring either an Apple or Android device that can support application downloads. COST: $8 member, $10 Non-member. Lorrimer Sanctuary invites families, friends, and nature lovers to join us for an exploration of our natural world. Enjoy watching your budding naturalist ‘go wild’ experiencing woodland adventures. Children use all their senses to safely explore and discover the wonders of nature here at Lorrimer Sanctuary. Led by Dorothy Smullen, Teacher/Naturalist Those diabolical plants! From poisonous to causing allergies, this presentation is all about those scary plants. Join Dorothy for an illustrated program on plants that are poisonous, spiny, deadly, invasive, or illegal. We will also see plants that trap and eat insects and those that cause allergies. Enjoy a quiet morning here at the Sanctuary walking the trails with an NJ Audubon staff or Associate Naturalist. These walks are informal and informative: birds, trees, tracks, wildflowers, reptiles, and amphibians are a few of nature’s wonders waiting for us to discover. The walks are cancelled if there is snow, rain, or weather warnings. Pre-registration required. Registration required by 4:00 PM the day before the walk. COST: Free for members, $5 nonmembers. Please join us for Winter Gardening 101, a continuation of the Diane Cornell Wildlife Garden Project suite of events. Have you been wanting to learn how to transform your backyard habitat into a haven for migrating and overwintering insects? This program at Cape May Point’s Triangle Park, a model backyard habitat, will provide you with an introduction into the gardening methods and variation species you can add to your home’s landscape for the colder months of the year! Join Jack McDonough, butterfly and invertebrate conservationist for the Endangered and Nongame Species Program under NJDEP Fish & Wildlife, who will be presenting on these important topics. The presentation will include a garden tour of Triangle Park, a discussion on insect migration, and the opportunity to take home seeds of various plants to add to your home garden!
