Led by Angus Macaulay, NJ Audubon Teacher Naturalist As autumn turns to winter join us at Hawk Rise Sanctuary. We will explore the plants and animals that make this place special and discuss how they prepare for winter. This program is appropriate for individuals of all ages. Come dressed for the weather. Make your own holiday wreath to take home while you learn how to ID our NJ native evergreen trees! Looking for a fun way to “spruce” up your home for the season while at the same learning about the importance of evergreens in your backyard? Lorrimer Sanctuary’s staff will teach you the techniques necessary to create a natural wreath that rivals the high-end products you’ve been admiring all season long! In the process you’ll learn to identify common evergreen trees by their leaves and cones, and understand the local ecology of NJ coniferous trees. All participants will go home with a one-of-a-kind, handmade wreath. All materials included in price. Using fresh evergreens, create a handcrafted wreath, garland and table decorations of distinction that will rival those gracing the pages of expensive specialty catalogs. The process is easy to learn, and even beginners leave with impressive creations. Greenery and wire are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own special decorations. Due to COVID-19-safety protocols this year we strongly recommend you bring your own pruning shears and gloves. Also, please dress warmly as these classes may have to be held outdoors on picnic tables.  Masks will be required to be worn during the entire session. Sessions are limited to 12 participants.  Pre-registration is a must.  If you have a large group, you can arrange for a private event!   NOTE: We will need plenty of fresh evergreens for these workshops. If anyone has evergreens from their yard to donate, please call the Nature Center of Cape May at 609.427.3045 to arrange for delivery or pick up. Thank you! New Jersey Audubon's Muddy Hands Academy - utilizing a Nature Preschool model. A great choice for your 3–6-year old's! *Free to apply! * Looking for a way to add nature learning to your little one's week? Join New Jersey Audubon Staff as we use local phenomena to explore the world around us. Children will spend their time outdoors on the Lorrimer Sanctuary property bouncing between hands-on, inquiry-based activities and free-play to help them develop their own understanding of the natural world. We will use Nature as a guide during this twice weekly program over a period of eight weeks. Lessons will include activities focused on natural history topics, a story and craft, age-appropriate risk taking, all with attention to mindfulness and fun. *NO COST TO APPLY! * Children must be a minimum of 3 to enroll and cannot be older than 6 years old to participate. All children in Muddy Hands Academy must be potty-trained and bathroom independent. The Muddy Hands Academy utilizes a Nature Preschool model with children spending as much time as possible outdoors. Children should be prepared for the weather including wet and muddy conditions. Class sizes are limited to 5 children per session. New Jersey Audubon’s Lorrimer Sanctuary is not a licensed childcare center. PLEASE NOTE: this application does not guarantee your child(ren)s acceptance into the program.
