Monarch Fest 2021

Celebrate the amazing monarch butterfly at Monarch Fest 2021!

Learn about monarchs, their migration and their habitats. Enjoy music, food, and monarch tagging demonstrations. Make a craft to take home along with a monarch-themed souvenir from a local vendor. *Pre-registration is NOT required. Suggested donations accepted at door.

 

Monarch Fest 2021 Program Schedule

10:00am: Festival Begins

10:15am: Butterfly Yoga: This special yoga practice hosted by itswell yoga will celebrate the monarch life cycle and migration through body movement and meditation. Please bring a mat or towel.

11:00am: Monarch Studies at Cape May: Learn the basics of monarch butterfly biology and about the Monarch Monitoring Project, which has studied the monarch migration through Cape May every autumn since 1990.  Speaker is Mark Garland, Director of the Monarch Monitoring Project.

12:00pm: Native Plants and their Critter Companions: Explore the beneficial and necessary plants that insects and other wildlife depend on. You can even purchase a native shrub/tree from our plant sale to take home with you to enhance your backyard habitat. Speaker is Gretchen Whitman, Center Director.

1:00pm: Thinking Past Pesticides: Get to know the lifestyles and impacts of insects around your home. Use this knowledge to reduce or eliminate pesticide use. Speaker is Kyle Rossner, Entomologist.

2:00pm: Community Science in the Garden: Take a walk through our wildlife garden and participate in community science projects while documenting monarchs, milkweed, and a diversity of other plants and animals. Speaker is Will Kaselow, George Meyers Naturalist.

3:00pm: Butterfly Parade and Kite Flight: We will wish the monarchs a happy migration through a celebratory sendoff. We invite you to join us in our parade along the harbor (costumes encouraged)!

4:00pm: Festival Ends

*Butterfly tagging demonstrations will take place throughout the day.
