Led by NJ Audubon Naturalist. We'll be looking for early fall migrants passing through Negri Nepote. We hope to see Blue Grosbeak and grassland specialties including Grasshopper Sparrow and Dickcissel before they migrate for the winter. NJ Audubon guided nature walks, for 13 years now, are funded by Franklin Township Open Space Committee. Please dress for the weather, and preferably wear boots. Please bring binoculars if you have them; we will have some loaner binoculars available. Please RSVP at 732-873-2500 ext 6279 or at [email protected]

Spring Dance of the Woodcock at the Negri Nepote Native Grassland

Led by Chris and Paula Williams, Associate Naturalists.  The American Woodcock, a long billed woodland bird probes in soft wet soil of wetlands and eats its weight in worms each day. Woodcock return to Franklin Township in late winter or early spring to mate and nest. Males of the species begin calling and performing an aerial courtship-display-flight when the afternoon shadows are almost gone. We’ll hear more than we see. Franklin Township’s open space program will, for the 15th consecutive year, sponsor guided nature walks on Township open space parcels.  Kindly RSVP at [email protected] or 732.873.2500 x6279.

Exploring the Negri Nepote Grasslands Preserve for Nesting Birds
