Birds: The open waters and nontidal wetlands of National Park Dredge Spoils support state-endangered Pied-billed Grebes and American Bitterns during the breeding season. Soras, Virginia Rails, Least Bitterns, Common Moorhens and American Coots also breed here. A diversity of fall migrants including Lincoln’s Sparrows, Nashville Warblers, Black-throated Blue Warblers and Blue-winged Warblers utilize the site’s scrub-shrub and edge habitats. Waterfowl species also find refuge here during winter months.Conservation: In May of 2006, the US Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) installed a series of pipes at National Park Dredge Spoils IBA to drain all standing water from the site. This project was completed during the breeding season of marsh dependant birds that occur at the site. Although no progress has been made, New Jersey Audubon Society continues its efforts to require ACE to restore the hydrology of the site to allow breeding habitat for Pied-billed Grebe and American Bittern to return to its original state.Additional Information: Site Report
