Habitat: Typical Pine Barrens habitats including mixed upland forest and shrub-scrub

Site Description: This IBA includes the Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and adjacent privately-owned lands. The site is characterized by expanses of pitch-pine/scrub-oak forest and scrub-shrub habitat. Atlantic white cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) communities are present in wetter areas. The IBA also offers an expanse of grassland habitat that is utilized by breeding grassland birds. Freshwater ponds provide habitat for wading birds and waterfowl.

Birds: Approximately 70 species regularly nest at Colliers Mills WMA, including many of the Regional Responsibility Species for scrub-shrub and mixed upland forest habitats. Other nesting birds include Eastern Phoebes, Eastern Bluebirds, Ovenbirds Blue Grosbeaks, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Northern Waterthrushes and Yellow-throated Vireos. Breeding grassland birds include the state-endangered Vesper Sparrow and the state-threatened Grasshopper and Savannah Sparrows. This site also provides significant habitat for a diversity of spring and fall migrants including, among others, American Bitterns, Virginia Rails, Spotted Sandpipers, Tree, Bank, Northern Rough-winged, Barn and Cliff Swallows, Prothonotary Warblers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks.

Conservation: Portions of Colliers Mills WMA are actively managed for early successional habitats including grasslands and scrub-shrub habitat. To maintain early successional habitats for species that require this habitat type, areas of the WMA are burned and mowed annually. Threats to the IBA include habitat loss and degradation caused by increased residential development on the periphery of the WMA and forest succession. Continued active management as well as restoration and protection of the adjacent privately-owned lands are recommended.
