You are about to explore an area nationally-treasured for its resources under the 1968 Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. What does that mean,
you ask? In 1993, portions of the Maurice River and its tributaries
(the Manumuskin, Menantico and Muskee) met the high standard of
possessing “outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural or other similar values,” in the words of
the original Congressional Act. Therefore, the Maurice River and its tributaries “shall be preserved in free-flowing condition, and … protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.” This route focuses on the wildlife surrounding this majestic river, so load up the water gear, and enjoy.
