| | Riverview Park is enjoyable for families and more advanced wildlife watchers alike. The park has a canoe/kayak launch and small fishing pier, as well as two baseball fields, a playground, and the Maurice River Walking and Biking Trail, which winds along the Maurice River. The entrance to the trail is just beyond the
farthest baseball field from the entrance. This trail, in the heart of the city, offers a shady stroll on which to contemplate nature.
checking the small pools of water along the trail for tadpoles in springtime.
Listen for the loud, raucous rattle of the Belted Kingfisher’s call and watch for it as it
hovers above the water looking for a meal. Great Blue Heron are common and the occasional river otter is seen here as well. Baltimore Oriole, Yellow Warbler and Common Yellowthroat are numerous. Scan the trees that line the path for these birds and others as they work the trees for insects. At night in March search the river for eels with a flashlight. These glass eels (juveniles) are catadromous and are returning to the stream in which they hatched. Carolina Wren, Northern Cardinal and Eastern Blue Jay can be seen and heard along this trail. Fishing is popular in various places along the river, especially from the bridges and the rocks by the dam. Riverview Park is a great access point for
a canoe or kayak trip along the Maurice River, especially while the leaves are changing color, but before the cold weather begins. While on
the river, keep your eyes on the sky overhead
for various raptors.
