Exit parking lot follow street to top of short hill. Turn Right onto Teaneck Road. Pass through 4 traffic lights, pass under the Route 4 overpass and after 1.3 miles turn Right onto Route 4 West entrance ramp. Be alert to high speed traffic, the merge onto Route 4 is short and dangerous. After 3.3 miles take Forest Avenue exit on the Right. Follow ramp staying to your Left. At the top, ramp splits, bear to your Right at traffic light and merge onto Forest Avenue. Pass through 1 traffic light and follow signs for Van Saun County Park. After 1 mile turn Right into the park. Map
NJ Transit Bus Line No. 168 New York stops at Forest Avenue and Spring Valley Road. Cross Forest Avenue at Spring Valley and follow signs for Van Saun Park. No. 752 Hackensack stops at Forest Avenue and Van Saun Park. Walking distance for both less than 1 mile. Be mindful of traffic — these are busy roads.

There is plenty to do for the whole family at Van Saun County Park which is also home to the Bergen County Zoological Park. The park offers six picnic areas, three pavilions, a baseball and softball field, tennis courts, train rides, pony rides, a bike path, a carousel and a pond where fishing is permitted; don’t forget to bring your fishing pole. The Zoological Park offers a host of animals for everyone to experience and enjoy such as the Bald Eagle, the elegant India Blue Peacock, American bison and prairie dog, just to name a few.
The pond is a great place to look for wildlife. Spring and fall migration in New Jersey always provides an opportunity to view new species passing through. Look to the pond for migrating wading birds, waterfowl and shorebirds, and remember to check the wooded areas throughout the park for warblers and migrating raptors. Winter can be a great time for wintering waterfowl like the Common and Hooded Mergansers, Ruddy Duck and do not forget the
resident Mallard and American Black Duck.
Don’t forget to take a ride on the new Millennium Carousel. For a touch of history visit the Washington Spring Garden. It is believed that this spring was used by the Continental Army of General George Washington in 1780. Open 9am to dusk.
The Bergen County Zoological Park is a “must see” where you will find animals from the North American Great Plains, Central and South America and the Farmyard. There is also a North American Wetlands Aviary. A small train runs around the zoo — a favorite activity for the children.
