Privacy Policy

The New Jersey Audubon Society is a privately supported, not-for profit, statewide membership organization. Founded in 1897, and one of the oldest independent Audubon societies, New Jersey Audubon has no connection with the National Audubon Society.

NJAS is committed to protecting the privacy of our members, donors, and all others who interact with us online and in person at our centers/sanctuaries, events, etc. This privacy policy (“Policy”) explains the information we collect when you interact with us in any way – how we collect it, how we use it, and how we protect it. Your use of or visits to our Site and physical locations constitutes your agreement to the terms of this Policy. From time to time, we may modify this Policy, so please review it periodically for changes. Your continued use of our Site(s) and participation in events or visits to our physical centers after we have modified the Policy indicates your agreement to the modified terms.

Personally Identifiable Information
What is Personally Identifiable Information? Personally Identifiable Information (“Your Information”) includes information such as your name, address, telephone number, email address, street address, credit card number and credit card expiration date.

How We Collect Your Information
NJAS collects Your Information only when you voluntarily provide it to us on our Site, at our centers, etc.  such as during an online transaction to purchase products or subscriptions, make donations, sign up to receive emails, become a member or complete registrations or surveys. You may need to provide Your Information to participate in certain NJAS programs and activities or receive certain services or offers. Please note that when you purchase some items offered on our Site, you must provide Your Information to a third-party service provider on its Web site. In these circumstances, you will know that you are on another Web site because the URL will change. You should read the privacy policy of the third-party site before providing Your Information.

How We Use Your Information
NJAS will use Your Information for the purpose for which you give it to us (e.g., to complete an online purchase, donation, membership, subscription, or program registration). We may use Your Information to send you occasional postal and/or electronic mailings about NJAS and its programs that we think interest you. NJAS may also use Your Information to send you occasional postal and/or electronic mailings about third parties whose information or services we think may be of interest to you.

Your Ability to Choose
You may “opt out” of receiving marketing information that NJAS sends to you by unsubscribing to the mailing list, following instructions in the applicable information sent to you, or by contacting NJAS at: [email protected]

How We Share Your Information
NJAS may share Your Information with third parties that perform services for NJAS, such as fulfilling magazine subscriptions, conducting membership mailings or providing postal and electronic mailing platforms and services. NJAS also reserves the right to disclose Your Information in circumstances that NJAS deems necessary or appropriate, such as to respond to legal process or request from a governmental agency, security reasons or similar situations.

Please note that if you become a Member, your Information may be shared with third parties (e.g., other nonprofit organizations, marketers) whose information or services we think may be of interest to you. These third parties may wish to communicate with you by regular mail or share your information with others. We will not share your email address. If you do not want the service provider to communicate with you or share your information, you will need to contact NJAS at [email protected]

E-mail Addresses

New Jersey Audubon does not sell, rent, exchange, or otherwise share e-mail addresses. However, within New Jersey Audubon, we do use e-mail addresses to send occasional updates about our work and special offers or other invitations which we believe may be of interest to you.

Member and Donor Information

Member and donor information is never sold or rented. However, New Jersey Audubon does periodically exchange the names and mailing addresses of a limited number of members and donors with other nonprofits (primarily conservation organizations) in order to obtain mailing lists for member acquisition. Additionally, New Jersey Audubon may occasionally partner with other organizations on product offers or promotions that we believe may be of interest to our members and donors.

You can help New Jersey Audubon maintain the accuracy of your information by contacting [email protected] with any changes to your name, mailing address, phone number, or e-mail address. To help us update your record, please include your mailing address and membership number, which appears on your membership card.

Anonymous Information – Online
NJAS may collect anonymous information about users who visit our Site and aggregate this anonymous information for statistical analysis. For instance, we may use it to determine usage patterns so we know which parts of our Site are most popular. Examples of the type of anonymous information we collect and how we collect it are:

Internet Tags: provide information about your browser (e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator), operating system (e.g., Windows, Macintosh), Internet service provider (e.g., America Online, Prodigy, Earthlink), and similar information.

IP Addresses: a number assigned to your computer by a Web server when you are on the Internet; we might use IP address information to determine the number of users who have visited a specific area of our Site. Please note we could use this information to identify you if necessary to comply with legal requirements or for security issues.

Our Site may include links to other Web sites that may be of interest to you. Any links are provided only as a convenience and do not imply any endorsement of another site. Be sure to read the privacy policies on other sites other Web sites. New Jersey Audubon’s Privacy Policy does not apply to other sites and we are not responsible for their privacy policies.

Security
NJAS strives to keep Your Information secure and safeguard it from unauthorized access by using “Secure Socket Layer” encryption to protect credit card numbers, firewalls to protect our servers, and virus/intrusion detection software. However, no transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so you provide Your Information at your own risk.

New Jersey Audubon has appropriate, industry-standard security measures in place in our physical facilities to protect against the loss or misuse of information that you have provided or that we have collected from you on our website. The information is only distributed to relevant staff members (e.g. membership staff, program registrars) based on the nature of the inquiry.

When you use a credit card to order services through our website or make a purchase or donation at one of our centers, the credit card information is transmitted over the internet using industry-standard SSL encryption. We use outside credit card processing companies to process online credit card transactions for dues payments, donations, goods, and services. These companies are compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and the Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS), and do not use personally identifiable information for any secondary purposes.

New Jersey Audubon uses outside vendors for mailings, updating address information, and other purposes. In each case, we verify that member information is handled securely and treated confidentially.

Other Information

From time to time, we may use information from visitors for new, unanticipated uses not previously disclosed in our Privacy Policy. If our information practices change in the future, we will post the policy changes to our website to notify users of these changes and provide you with the ability to opt out of these new uses. New Jersey Audubon does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13.  On-line visitors under 13 years of age should not submit personal information to us without permission from a parent or legal guardian.  If you believe that we may have collected information from a child under 13 without the permission of a parent or legal guardian, please contact us at [email protected].

Transfer to the United States
If you are located outside of the United States, please note that the information you provide to us will be transferred to the United States and that by providing Your Information, you consent to this transfer and storage of the data in the United States.

If you believe that your work has been copied in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, please provide NJAS’s Copyright Agent the following information required by the Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. 512:

  5. User Rules – In order to maintain an efficient and effective site that addresses the needs and interests of its viewers, the following rules apply to the use of this site:
