Constellations and Cocoa
Enjoy the natural beauty of the stars at night, learn about the winter constellations, and warm up with a cup of hot cocoa! Visit Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary for this after-dark program all about the stars! We'll be looking up as we learn all about the winter constellations and their myths as we sip on hot cocoa during this family-friendly program. The first part of this event will take place indoors, then we will head outside to observe the stars. Please dress appropriately. This event is weather dependent and will be cancelled if there is rain or cloud cover, participants will be notified of cancellations by 5:00 PM. Enjoy a quiet morning here at the Sanctuary walking the trails with an NJ Audubon staff or Associate Naturalist. These walks are informal and informative: birds, trees, tracks, wildflowers, reptiles, and amphibians are a few of nature’s wonders waiting for us to discover. This 6hr Mini Pelagic tour is offered in partnership with the Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center. The cruise will focus on exploring the inshore Pelagic Zone (approx. 3-20 miles) off Cape May, NJ for Pelagic Birds and Marine Mammals. Marine Mammal Naturalists from Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center with our expert Pelagic Bird Naturalists from the Cape May Bird Observatory and will guide you through spotting and photographing the amazing wildlife Cape May has to offer! This trip is an excellent choice for the beginner in pelagic birding to try out a longer cruise, as well as a convenient option for the experienced birder to get out on the ocean! Enjoy the comfort of our heated inside cabin and full galley/bar aboard the American Star. eBird checklists are created by our team of experts and shared after the trip. Prepaid Reservations Only! Birding After Dark

There is nothing quite like watching the sunset over the ocean in Cape May, New Jersey. Now, imagine getting treated to that sunset while spending the last few hours of daylight searching for various critters who thrive during the crepuscular hours! Join CMBO’s Program Coordinator, Adehl Schwaderer, and Associate Naturalists to observe birds as they wind down for the evening and track down the peculiar ‘peeent’ of a woodcock or the call of a territorial owl. This program will be held on Cape Island, with the final location selected depending on the presence of bird activity and shared the week of the program. A small flashlight may be helpful toward the end of the trip for walking back to vehicles. -We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions and recent bird sightings. We may walk up to 1.5 miles on sand and boardwalk. Please arrive at the appointed time with a full tank of gas as transportation is by private vehicle. These reservoirs can host lots of geese, ducks, and gulls. We'll also search nearby uplands for field and forest birds. These reservoirs are known for a variety of wintering waterfowl and up to 7 species of gulls, including some of the highest counts of Lesser Black-backed Gulls in North America. We’ll also bird the surrounding parks’ upland habitats for other wintering species like raptors and songbirds. Expect to walk 3-4 miles on well-defined trails and paths. Led by Alan Mart. NJ Young Birders Club-DeKorte Park (NJ Meadowlands)
See wintering waterfowl, gulls, and birds of prey at this productive urban oasis. Open to youth 11-17 yrs old with parent/guardian. The wetlands and uplands of DeKorte can provide an excellent birding experience where a wide range of species including geese, ducks, gulls, and raptors may be viewed. Patches of trees and shrubs provide refuge for landbirds. Some birds we'll search for include many ducks including Norther Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Canvasback; plus a chance for a rare gull and raptors like Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, Bald Eagle, and Peregrine Falcon. Be prepared for walking over flat terrain and possibly cold weather. We will spend three hours on our feet at traveling at a leisurely pace. Led by Scott Barnes and Mary Birrer. John James Audubon: A Visionary Artist – Presentation by Tom Lamb
Tom Lamb will give a brief overview of the extraordinary life and achievements of John James Audubon, along with what makes him the greatest bird artist, and some of the controversies that surround him. Tom will also discuss why Audubon prints are so valued and why some publishers of the prints might be more desirable than others. Tom Lamb is a retired auction specialist who started at Christie’s in 1980 in London and moved to Bloomsbury Book auctions in 2007, and to Bonhams Book department in 2011 before retiring in 2021. He was always involved in book and map auction records. In his retirement he has set up a consultancy firm providing advice on Appraisals and Estate management. Join our Stewardship Technician Will to walk the grounds of Scherman Hoffman to clean and prepare our next boxes for the spring. Cleaning old bird nests is a crucial aspect of responsible bird care. While it might seem counterintuitive to remove what appears to be a cozy home, there are several compelling reasons why this practice is essential for the health and well-being of our feathered friends. Old nests can harbor parasites, bacteria, and other harmful organisms that can pose serious threats to future broods. By removing these potential hazards, we create a safer environment for nesting birds and increase the chances of successful breeding in the coming seasons. Additionally, cleaning out old nests helps prevent the accumulation of debris and waste, which can attract unwanted pests and predators. Led by Chris and Paula Williams, NJ Audubon Associate Naturalists. The American Woodcock, a long-billed woodland bird probes in soft wet soil of wetlands and eats its weight in worms each day. Woodcock return to Franklin Township in late winter or early spring to mate and nest. Males of the species begin calling and performing an aerial courtship-display-flight when the afternoon shadows are almost gone. We’ll hear more than we see. Franklin Township’s open space program will, for the 20th consecutive year, sponsor guided nature walks on Township open space parcels. There is nothing quite like watching the sunset over the ocean in Cape May, New Jersey. Now, imagine getting treated to that sunset while spending the last few hours of daylight searching for various critters who thrive during the crepuscular hours! Join CMBO’s Program Coordinator, Adehl Schwaderer, and Associate Naturalists to observe birds as they wind down for the evening and track down the peculiar ‘peeent’ of a woodcock or the call of a territorial owl. This program will be held on Cape Island, with the final location selected depending on the presence of bird activity and shared the week of the program. A small flashlight may be helpful toward the end of the trip for walking back to vehicles. -We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions and recent bird sightings. We may walk up to 1.5 miles on sand and boardwalk. Please arrive at the appointed time with a full tank of gas as transportation is by private vehicle. In addition to reviewing equipment selection and use, the topics of time of day, weather, composition and light will be covered. Students will be introduced to critical variables to control in bird/wildlife photography, such as exposure and shutter speed. Phil will cover typical camera settings useful for bird/wildlife photography. More often than not, birds are heard before they are seen (if seen at all!) Learning their songs will add another dimension to your birdwatching. Randy learned birding as a youngster under the wings of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s founders and is a master at recording bird songs for the Cornell Lab. NJ Audubon: Beginner Teacher Naturalist Training
A great opportunity for retired teachers and nature enthusiasts with experience teaching children. Do you enjoy the outdoors? Would you like to be involved in environmental education? We are offering the opportunity to support Scherman Hoffman's environmental education team. As a Program Facilitator, you would teach environmental education programs in an outdoor setting to school and scout groups, afterschool programs, children's birthday parties, summer camp, and outreach programs for adults and children. Share your enthusiasm and knowledge of the natural world with others and have the reward of watching children learn about and connect with the natural world all around them. Once you satisfactorily complete the program, you will join the Scherman Hoffman team of paid Program Facilitators and be required to teach weekday, weekend, and evening programs, and summer camp. As part of your training, you will be required to volunteer as a camp assistant for one week of 2025 summer nature camp. SCHEDULE: Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. The “shoulder season” in Cape May is a wonderful time for birding and there’s no better place to do it than the Cape May Point State Park. With its diversity of habitat – beach, dunes, ponds, forest, and marsh – it’s the perfect spot for migrating waterfowl, songbirds and shorebirds to stop and refuel as the push of spring migration begins. We’ll travel the trails, check out CMBO’s Northwood Center and other surrounding hotspots on The Point, as we soak up the wonder of this annual phenomenon of Nature. Join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding at the Cape May Point State Park and let us share with you the wonder of this special time of year. Led by Dave Oster, Associate Naturalist The park is located directly on Raritan Bay and features beach, tidal flats, salt marsh, and wooded areas. A paved walking path runs along the waterfront offering unobstructed views of Raritan Bay. We’ll be looking for a variety of seabirds including Common and Red-throated Loon, Horned Grebe, Scoters and Scaup, Gannet and Bonaparte's Gull, all found on past trips. Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, and Harriers are regulars. At this time of year Gannets and Horned Grebes often mass in Raritan Bay and numbers can be impressive. Over 1,000 Gannet in March 2021! Much of the trip is on level ground but prepare for wind and weather. Please bring your own binoculars, and spotting scope if desired. COST: $15 members, $20 nonmembers. Registration is required. Join retired teacher, wood worker, and bird watcher, Dave Pasake, to learn how different types of boxes attract different birds. Box size and shape, hole size, type of wood, floor area, placement height and habitat where the box is placed all affect the desirability of the bird box and the chances of it being used by the bird you are trying to attract. From artisan birdhouses created for non-specific residents to next boxes made specifically for certain birds like bluebirds, kestrels, wood ducks or screech owls, the purpose is the same, “... if you make it, they will come!” One person per ticket.
