After School Nature Club (Winter Session)
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesJoin us after school for this 1-hour Wednesday afternoon program! Each day will feature a nature topic, walk, craft, activity, and/or story! We welcome the next generation of naturalists to Lorrimer Sanctuary for our after-school nature club! Designed to be a continuation from our Tiny Tots program, we will read books, explore outside, make nature-themed crafts, and learn about the environment in age-appropriate ways. This IS a drop-off program, but parents are invited to stay and have coffee or chat inside during the program! Homeschoolers welcome! Registration ends at 5 pm the day before each event! COST: $8 per child for members $10 per child for nonmembers, $95 Member Child (All Session Ticket) $110 Non-Member Child (All Session Ticket) SCHEDULE: January 7th: Squirrels January 14th: Sowing Seeds January 21st: Migration and Hibernation January 28th: Oh Deer! Tiny Tots – Winter Series
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesWe welcome a new generation of budding naturalists to Lorrimer Sanctuary for this "grown-up-and-me" style program. We will read books, explore outside, and learn about nature in age-appropriate ways for littles! This program is best for kids 18 months to 3.5yrs. *These programs are hands-on and will get children dirty and/or wet. Registration ends at 5 pm the day before each event! SCHEDULE: December 4th: Pick Apart a Pinecone! Guests will have the rare opportunity to view authentic late 19th and early 20th century taxidermy specimens up close, exploring how naturalists of the past documented and preserved wildlife long before modern photography and field science. During this hands-on program, participants will: Examine historic taxidermy pieces from Lorrimer’s collection Learn how taxidermy developed through history and its evolving role in science and education Hear surprising stories from the early days of wildlife conservation Understand how scientific attitudes toward nature changed from the 1800s to today Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply curious, this one-of-a-kind experience offers a compelling look at how humans have studied wildlife through the centuries. Birding Cape May Point
Cape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. So let us add some joy to your winter – join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding around Cape May Point. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. Spruce Run Boat Launch 12 Van Syckles Rd, Clinton, NJ, United StatesThese reservoirs can host lots of geese, ducks, and gulls. We'll also search nearby uplands for field and forest birds. These reservoirs are known for a variety of wintering waterfowl and up to 7 species of gulls, including some of the highest counts of Lesser Black-backed Gulls in North America. We’ll also bird the surrounding parks’ upland habitats for other wintering species like raptors and songbirds. Expect to walk 3-4 miles on well-defined trails and paths. Led by Alan Mart. Featured Nighttime on the BeachSigns of Winter: Nature Sensory Stroll
Nature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesDon’t let the chilly winter months keep you from spending time outside! Bundle up and join us for a family-friendly, sensory-focused nature walk! We will take a gentle stroll around the nature center trails, focusing on the sights, sounds, and textures of winter. We will identify trees, search for signs of wildlife, and collect a few natural treasures along the way. Note: We may walk up to a mile, over generally level surfaces. Some surfaces may be muddy or uneven. Please dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear. Pre-registration is required. WHEN: Saturdays, 9 am- 10 am MEETING LOCATION: Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, New Jersey. Meet 5-10 minutes prior to the start of the program. Barnegat Light and Environs
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park Broadway, Barnegat Light, NJ, United StatesHarlequins & other sea ducks; plus loons and gannets. We'll visit some nearby bayside spots after birding the inlet for additional species. Early winter birding for Harlequin Ducks, eiders, and scoters. In some years seabird migration is still underway (sometimes alcids), and we may also see many gulls, loons and gannets. The beaches may host Horned Larks, Am. Pipits, and/or Snow Buntings. After birding the lighthouse/inlet area, we'll caravan to nearby bayside spots for more species. Meet in the main parking lot of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, lunch, and dress warmly! Led by Scott Barnes & Linda Mack. LOCATION: Meet in the main parking lot of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. IN-PERSON Nature Infused Yoga
New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesLed by Kristen Mylecraine, Yoga Teacher and NJ Audubon Senior Research Scientist Yoga is a great way to relax, connect with yourself, and increase flexibility and strength. Explore the connections between yoga and nature in this 75-minute class. No experience necessary; all levels welcome. Please arrive 10 minutes early and bring a yoga mat. For ages 15 years and older. This workshop will be held outdoors when the weather is suitable. During inclement weather it will be held indoors. Ticket sale ends at 4:30 PM on the Friday before each class. We are offering an in-person class at the sanctuary and a virtual class online simultaneously. Be sure to purchase the correct ticket. There will be no classes 12/27, 1/17, and 2/14.
