Winter Break Fun
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesJoin us for an epic Winter Break filled with thrilling activities and endless fun! Join us for an exciting Winter Break at the Lorrimer Sanctuary! Get ready for a week filled with fun, adventure, and learning in the great outdoors! Fun activities include maple sugaring, mammal study, winter weather science and more! This program is geared for children in kindergarten through 3rd grade (roughly 5y-9y). This program will take place mainly outdoors and participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions including closed-toed shoes. Participants should bring a lunch and reusable water bottle. Sign up for one day or sign up for them all! COST: Member Child $65 Member Child 4-day ticket $250 Non-member Child $65 Non-member Child 4-day ticket $260 Please note that Lorrimer's building facilities will be going under construction sometime during the fall and winter. If this leads to cancelled programming, we will refund your order completely and let you know as soon as possible about these cancellations. Open Air/ Open Space Art Exhibition at the Wayrick Wildlife Art Gallery
New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesExperience Open Air / Open Space, a juried art exhibit celebrating Somerset County's Open Space Preservation Program, featured in the Wayrick Art Gallery on the 2nd floor of the Scherman Hoffman Nature Center from February 6 through March 25. This special exhibition showcases the unique beauty of Somerset County's extensive public park system through the perspectives of both professional and novice New Jersey Plein Air artists. Sponsored by the Somerset County Board of County Commissioners, Somerset County Park Commission, Somerset County Open Space Preservation Program, and Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, the exhibit honors the county's long-standing commitment to preserving land for conservation, passive use, and active recreation. Birding Cape May Point
Cape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. So let us add some joy to your winter – join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding around Cape May Point. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. IN-PERSON Nature Infused Yoga
New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesLed by Kristen Mylecraine, Yoga Teacher and NJ Audubon Senior Research Scientist Yoga is a great way to relax, connect with yourself, and increase flexibility and strength. Explore the connections between yoga and nature in this 75-minute class. No experience necessary; all levels welcome. Please arrive 10 minutes early and bring a yoga mat. For ages 15 years and older. This workshop will be held outdoors when the weather is suitable. During inclement weather it will be held indoors. Ticket sale ends on the day of each class at 10:45 AM. We are offering an in-person class at the sanctuary and a virtual class online simultaneously. Be sure to purchase the correct ticket. There will be no classes 12/27, 1/17, and 2/14. Barnegat Lighthouse State Park Broadway, Barnegat Light, NJ, United StatesLed by Scott Barnes and Adehl Schwaderer Are you a youth birder looking for an opportunity to improve your winter seabird identification skills? Join New Jersey Audubon Staff and Volunteers at Barnegat Light State Park for the chance to see various overwintering bird species! Barnegat Inlet is one of the best places to see beautiful Harlequin Ducks in the state, along with other sea ducks, loons, grebes, and Purple Sandpipers. We will also be on the lookout for more uncommon species in the Inlet, like Black-legged Kittiwakes or Razorbills. We will be walking most of the day. We will take a walk on the long stone walkway near the inlet or along a sandy beach. Our route will depend on the weather on the day of the trip. Time and weather permitting, we may look for Short-eared Owls and other birds at nearby marshes later in the day. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Recommended age for field trip: 8 years old and up. Parents or guardians are required to accompany their children during this program at no additional charge. When registering, please use the youth birders name. Eastern Bluebirds are great insect eaters. In this workshop you will assemble a nest box from a kit and learn how to maintain your nest box. We’ll look at several ways to mount your nest box in your yard. Tools, materials, and instruction provided. If you have a cordless screwdriver feel free to bring it. Recommended for adults. An afternoon at Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR
Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge Admin Building And Visitor Contact Station 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, NJ, United StatesLarge numbers of waterfowl & raptors, plus wintering songbirds at one of the best birding spots in the state. An afternoon and evening birding at one of the state's best birding spots. The varied habitats of Forsythe NWR assure a good variety of species from ducks to raptors and sparrows. This a good time of year for eagles, hawks, and other birds of prey. Easy birding around an 8-mile wildlife drive. Led by Mike Mandracchia and Hank Burk.
