Weequahic Park Bird Walk
Winter birding for geese, ducks, and gulls around the lake. Easy walking trails and relaxed pace. Visit an Essex County oasis while searching for wintering ducks, gulls and passerine birds. All can be viewed along an easy trail around the lake. Enter at Meeker and Empire Streets, then bear left and continue to the large parking area on the south side of the lake. We hope to find a variety of wintering birds in the wetland meadows and forests of this largely intact Essex County reservation. Explore varied habitats for a wide variety of birds including raptors, sparrows and more. Footing may be wet. Meet at Stop & Shop, 875 Bloomfield Avenue, West Caldwell, NJ 07006 and carpool from there to different parts of this large reservation. Mannington Marsh and Environs
March brings a good mix of waterfowl, herons, egrets, some shorebirds & early songbirds to this productive and rural part of NJ. Mannington Marsh can hold a good variety of ducks, herons, and egrets, plus shorebirds. There are usually plenty of Bald Eagles around and a resident pair of Sandhill Cranes. Early spring migrants like swallows, kinglets, and sparrows may be present. We’ll also visit other nearby areas including Featherbed Lane. Led by Scott Barnes, Linda Mack, and associate naturalists. Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR
Late winter birding at one of the state's best hotspots. Expect good numbers of ducks, geese, and swans, plus eagles and other raptors. This can be an excellent time of year at “Brig,” when eagles and other raptors are in evidence, plus large numbers of geese and ducks. We may also find sparrows and other songbirds along the dikes and keep our eyes out for secretive marsh birds like American Bittern and rails. Bring lunch and weather appropriate clothing. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park has long been known as a concentration point for Bonaparte's Gulls in spring. If we're lucky a Little Gull or Black-headed Gull could be among them. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds in early spring and some landbird migrants could be around. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay. Early spring migration at “the hook.” If the winds are right, we could have a good flight of hawks, and swallows, and songbirds. A transitional time of year when we should see waterfowl, loons, and gulls plus early spring arrivals that may include Piping Plover. If the winds are right, we could get a flight of vultures and hawks. Bring lunch and weather appropriate clothing. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack.
