Assunpink WMA
Late spring songbird migrants plus breeding species including both cuckoos & Yellow-breasted Chat at this productive central jersey hotspot. This productive locale has a mix of fields, woods, wetlands, and lakes. Spring songbird migrants plus breeding species including Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoos, Yellow-breasted Chat and more. We’ll check the lake and adjacent wetlands for waterbirds. Bring lunch and be prepared for a moderate amount of walking over varied terrain. NOTE: there are no restrooms at Assunpink, so plan accordingly. Sometimes there is one port-a-john available. Led by Scott Barnes and Carole Hughes. Location: Meet at the Lake Assunpink Boat Launch just north of the intersection of Imlaystown Rd and Clarksburg-Robbinsville Rd. A perennial favorite for many breeding warblers and other songbirds in a beautiful setting during the height of the nesting season. Great roadside birding along the scenic upper Delaware River, with a wide variety of breeding songbirds, including Black-billed Cuckoo, Alder Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, Worm-eating, Hooded, & Cerulean Warblers. Negri-Nepote Grasslands
We’ll search for nesting grassland birds including Grasshopper Sparrow at this hidden gem. This restored grassland hosts a good variety of breeding species including American Kestrel, Black-billed Cuckoo, Grasshopper Sparrow, Orchard Oriole, and Blue Grosbeak. Be prepared for three hours of walking over flat terrain. We’ll also spend a little time looking at butterflies and dragonflies. There are no restrooms on site. An Evening at Forsythe (Brig) NWR
Evening birding at the refuge looking for waders, late shorebirds, and marsh birds. We'll finish by listening for nightjars & owls. We’ll do a leisurely spin around the wildlife drive looking for late shorebirds, breeding species including Clapper Rail, herons, egrets, Seaside and Saltmarsh Sparrows and finish the trip by listening for Chuck-will’s-widow and Eastern Whip-poor-will. For youth ages 11-18 interested in birds. Search this productive site for a variety of nesting songbirds and other species. Assunpink Wildlife Management Area is one of central jersey's best birding spots. We'll explore fields, forests, and wetlands for a variety of nesting species including both cuckoos, Willow Flycatcher, Pileated Woodpecker, Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, and Yellow-breasted Chat. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking with one moderate incline. Ticks and other biting insects may be present-bring insect repellent. Led by Linda Mack and Carole Hughes.
