Constellations and Cocoa
Constellations and Cocoa
Enjoy the natural beauty of the stars at night, learn about the winter constellations, and warm up with a cup of hot cocoa! Visit Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary for this after-dark program all about the stars! We'll be looking up as we learn all about the winter constellations and their myths as we sip on hot cocoa during this family-friendly program. The first part of this event will take place indoors, then we will head outside to observe the stars. Please dress appropriately. This event is weather dependent and will be cancelled if there is rain or cloud cover, participants will be notified of cancellations by 5:00 PM. Led by Kristin Mylecraine, Yoga Teacher. Yoga is a great way to relax, connect with yourself, and increase flexibility and strength. Explore the connections between yoga and nature in this 75-minute class. No experience necessary; all levels welcome. For ages 15 years and older. This class will be held weekly from 3/2/25 to 5/31/25. There will be no class on 4/19, 5/10, and 5/24. Ticket sales end at 4:30 PM on the Friday before each class. You must pre-register, walk-ins will not be allowed to participate. We are offering an in-person class at the sanctuary and a virtual class online simultaneously. John James Audubon: A Visionary Artist – Presentation by Tom Lamb
Tom Lamb will give a brief overview of the extraordinary life and achievements of John James Audubon, along with what makes him the greatest bird artist, and some of the controversies that surround him. Tom will also discuss why Audubon prints are so valued and why some publishers of the prints might be more desirable than others. Tom Lamb is a retired auction specialist who started at Christie’s in 1980 in London and moved to Bloomsbury Book auctions in 2007, and to Bonhams Book department in 2011 before retiring in 2021. He was always involved in book and map auction records. In his retirement he has set up a consultancy firm providing advice on Appraisals and Estate management. Join our Stewardship Technician Will to walk the grounds of Scherman Hoffman to clean and prepare our next boxes for the spring. Cleaning old bird nests is a crucial aspect of responsible bird care. While it might seem counterintuitive to remove what appears to be a cozy home, there are several compelling reasons why this practice is essential for the health and well-being of our feathered friends. Old nests can harbor parasites, bacteria, and other harmful organisms that can pose serious threats to future broods. By removing these potential hazards, we create a safer environment for nesting birds and increase the chances of successful breeding in the coming seasons. Additionally, cleaning out old nests helps prevent the accumulation of debris and waste, which can attract unwanted pests and predators. This simple act of maintenance can make a significant difference in the overall ecosystem of your backyard, promoting a healthier and more diverse bird population. NJ Audubon Learning the Birds by Song Series
Led by Randy Little, Associate Naturalist For beginners and those with some experience, this birding-by-ear series will improve your bird identification skills. More often than not, birds are heard before they are seen (if seen at all!) Learning their songs will add another dimension to your birdwatching. Randy Little is a former NJA board member and long-time NJA volunteer. Randy learned birding as a youngster under the wings of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s founders and is a master at recording bird songs for the Cornell Lab. This series will begin Wednesday March 12 and continue every Wednesday evening until April 16. March 12 & 19 classes will cover the winter resident birds, March 26 & April 2 classes will cover the early migrant birds, and April 9 & 16 classes will cover the summer resident birds. Registration and fee are per class. You must pre-register for each class you wish to attend. Ticket sale for each class ends at 4:00 PM on the day of the class. Spring Dance of the Woodcock at Negri Nepote Native Grassland
Led by Chris and Paula Williams, NJ Audubon Associate Naturalists. The American Woodcock, a long-billed woodland bird probes in soft wet soil of wetlands and eats its weight in worms each day. Woodcock return to Franklin Township in late winter or early spring to mate and nest. Males of the species begin calling and performing an aerial courtship-display-flight when the afternoon shadows are almost gone. We’ll hear more than we see. Franklin Township’s open space program will, for the 20th consecutive year, sponsor guided nature walks on Township open space parcels. Led by Sue Predl, Nature Store Assistant Join Sue for a guided two-mile nature hike to enjoy the trees, birds, and plant life at Scherman Hoffman Nature Sanctuary on Saturday January 11 and 25. The trails we hike will vary, but we can guarantee beautiful views of our sanctuary. We will hike approximately 2 miles. Walking time is flexible but will be approximately 2 ½ hours. Please dress for the winter weather and wear sturdy shoes; be prepared to walk on uneven ground and up hills. The hike will go rain or shine. In addition to reviewing equipment selection and use, the topics of time of day, weather, composition and light will be covered. Students will be introduced to critical variables to control in bird/wildlife photography, such as exposure and shutter speed. Phil will cover typical camera settings useful for bird/wildlife photography. More often than not, birds are heard before they are seen (if seen at all!) Learning their songs will add another dimension to your birdwatching. Randy Little is a former NJA board member and long-time NJA volunteer. Randy learned birding as a youngster under the wings of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s founders and is a master at recording bird songs for the Cornell Lab. This series will begin Wednesday March 12 and continue every Wednesday evening until April 16. A great opportunity for retired teachers and nature enthusiasts with experience teaching children. Do you enjoy the outdoors? Would you like to be involved in environmental education? We are offering the opportunity to support Scherman Hoffman's environmental education team. As a Program Facilitator, you would teach environmental education programs in an outdoor setting to school and scout groups, afterschool programs, children's birthday parties, summer camp, and outreach programs for adults and children. Share your enthusiasm and knowledge of the natural world with others and have the reward of watching children learn about and connect with the natural world all around them. Once you satisfactorily complete the program, you will join the Scherman Hoffman team of paid Program Facilitators and be required to teach weekday, weekend, and evening programs, and summer camp. As part of your training, you will be required to volunteer as a camp assistant for one week of 2025 summer nature camp. SCHEDULE: Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Led by Dave Oster, Associate Naturalist The park is located directly on Raritan Bay and features beach, tidal flats, salt marsh, and wooded areas. A paved walking path runs along the waterfront offering unobstructed views of Raritan Bay. We’ll be looking for a variety of seabirds including Common and Red-throated Loon, Horned Grebe, Scoters and Scaup, Gannet and Bonaparte's Gull, all found on past trips. Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, and Harriers are regulars. At this time of year Gannets and Horned Grebes often mass in Raritan Bay and numbers can be impressive. Over 1,000 Gannet in March 2021! Much of the trip is on level ground but prepare for wind and weather. Please bring your own binoculars, and spotting scope if desired. COST: $15 members, $20 nonmembers. Registration is required. Join retired teacher, wood worker, and bird watcher, Dave Pasake, to learn how different types of boxes attract different birds. Box size and shape, hole size, type of wood, floor area, placement height and habitat where the box is placed all affect the desirability of the bird box and the chances of it being used by the bird you are trying to attract. From artisan birdhouses created for non-specific residents to next boxes made specifically for certain birds like bluebirds, kestrels, wood ducks or screech owls, the purpose is the same, “... if you make it, they will come!” One person per ticket.
