Birding Cape May Point
Cape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. So let us add some joy to your winter – join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding around Cape May Point. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. Bring your love and your binoculars to this free guided bird walk! We're hoping to get your heart soaring for birdwatching as we chat about beginner techniques and look for early nesters. Join Dorothy Smullen, Teacher Naturalist, to count the birds at the bird feeding station from the comfort of the Welcome Center/Nature Store. Learn how to sign up and count birds in your own backyard to be a citizen scientist in this world-wide citizen science program established in 1998 by National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Subjects covered include equipment, planning, composition, and capture. In addition, the program will cover photo editing techniques used to process landscape images using Adobe Camera RAW, Photoshop, and NIK Plug Ins. Students are encouraged to bring a flashdrive with two images (preferably RAW) for review and discussion. Registration required, ticket sales end on 02/13/26 at 4:00 PM. Avalon - 8th Street Parking Lot Avalon, NJ, United StatesJoin Program Coordinator Adehl Schwaderer and CMBO naturalists on a search for wintering waterfowl from Avalon to Cape May! February is a wonderful time of year to seek out various species of waterfowl, as lingering winterers are joined by northbound migrants. We will travel through coastal and inland areas of Cape May County to find and enjoy a wide range of species, including scoters, mergansers, eiders, and many other ducks, plus a great array of shorebirds, cormorants, grebes. At each stop, we will take time to study various identification clues: plumage, size & shape, flight characteristics, and behavior to help improve your bird identification skills. This birding break has something to offer birders of all skill and experience levels. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. Fun activities include maple sugaring, mammal study, winter weather science and more! This program is geared for children in kindergarten through 3rd grade (roughly 5y-9y). This program will take place mainly outdoors and participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions including closed-toed shoes. Participants should bring a lunch and reusable water bottle. Sign up for one day or sign up for them all! Nature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesCalling all future naturalists! Join us at the Nature Center of Cape May for a nature-inspired “Grown-up & Me” program. We will read books, explore nature with hands-on sensory activities, and have fun! This program is best suited for children 18 months - 3.5 years old. We will be exploring nature hands-on; children may get wet and/or dirty. Weather permitting, we may spend a portion of this program outside. Please dress accordingly. Registration is required. An adult must accompany children. After School Nature Club (Winter Session)

Each day will feature a nature topic, walk, craft, activity, and/or story! We welcome the next generation of naturalists to Lorrimer Sanctuary for our after-school nature club! Designed to be a continuation from our Tiny Tots program, we will read books, explore outside, make nature-themed crafts, and learn about the environment in age-appropriate ways. This IS a drop-off program, but parents are invited to stay and have coffee or chat inside during the program! Homeschoolers welcome! Registration ends at 5 pm the day before each event!
