Atkinson began her career as a professional illustrator, creating concept-driven imagery for book covers and editorial publications, where she became known for translating complex ideas into compelling visual narratives. She later transitioned to fine art, working primarily in oil, balancing subtle storytelling with expressive, painterly techniques. Her work has been recognized by Communication Arts, the Society of Illustrators, the Hispanic Creative Awards, and Print Design Annual. In 2026, she was selected for juried exhibitions including Visions: AAPL at the Carriage Barn Arts Center, the James Library & Center for the Arts 7th Annual Spring Show, and the Jackson's Art Prize 2026 Extended Long List. With migration in full swing, every day sees new arrivals! Experience the diversity, abundance, sounds and colors of Spring migration at Cape May Point. We’ll enjoy a bonanza of seabirds, waterfowl, shorebirds, songbirds and more in the shadow of the lighthouse and nearby habitats. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. If winds are right, we could have a modest hawk flight. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park has long been known as a concentration point for Bonaparte's Gulls in spring. If we're lucky a Little Gull or Black-headed Gull could be among them. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds in early spring and some landbird migrants could be around. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay. Be prepared for easy walking for 3 hours. Restrooms on site. Led by Scott Barnes and Hank Burk. Join area writer, birder, and conservation advocate Kelly Ball to craft a life-sized bird sculpture from upcycled cloth and become part of a crowdsourced art project. Each handcrafted bird commemorates a real bird that lost its life after hitting glass. Your bird will become part of a 300-ft art project that will travel the U.S. to educate the public about bird-window collisions and you'll be part of the searchable database of people that contributed. We'll also learn how to prevent bird-window collisions - especially important during spring migration! Note: This is a family-friendly program. Adults must accompany children. Warren Park (at the border of Woodbridge & Perth Amboy) has an excellent hardwood forest—complete with understory that is excellent for thrushes, vireos, and warblers; we’ll also visit the Oros Wildlife Preserve where pin oaks, brushy fields, and a large pond/wetland will complement the day’s bird list. Oros Preserve is sometimes muddy, so hiking shoes or other footwear you don’t mind getting a little dirty are best. A spotting scope is not necessary for this trip. Take a moment to make sure you go to the right location. Once you enter the park, you will come to a T intersection. Turn left and follow this road clockwise until it ends in a wooded parking lot north of what the park map calls "The Open Grove."
