Birding Cape May Point – February 15, 2025

Leaders: Roger Horn, Holly & Mark Lemieux

Temp: 38° F

Winds:  SE 9 mph

Weather Conditions: cloudy

A little wind and 38 degrees at Cape May Point State Park this morning. Starting off on the Red Trail we headed to Lighthouse Pond. Ring-necked Duck and Gadwall along with Mallards and Canada were at the west end while nothing more than a Muskrat was at the East end of the pond. Continuing through to the Blue and Yellow trail there were American Crows possibly mobbing a predator, but we couldn’t discern any. We stopped on the path to Seagrove Avenue, and we had great looks at Northern Flicker, Red-bellied Woodpecker and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, while overhead American Robins were sailing by. Later we came across Gray Catbird eating berries and a Hermit Thrush hopping and running ahead of us along the trail. The Plover Ponds had a small variety of ducks to review, Hooded Mergansers, American Widgeon and Northern Pintail to name a few, as well as Greater Yellowlegs. Many Yellow-rumped Warblers flitted about making it lively with bird life as we made our back to the parking lot along the dunes.
