Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, NJ, United StatesSummer is a great time for shorebirds, herons, egrets, and terns at one of the best birding spots in the state. It might be mid-summer, but bird migration is well underway beginning in July. Each week should bring different species of shorebirds as they stop to feed and rest at this productive refuge. There are usually good numbers of herons, egrets, and ibis present. Also present may be various terns and songbirds. Multiple habitats here ensure a good variety of birds. Garret Mountain Reservation
Garrett Mountain Reservation - Three-Tiered Parking Lot Garrett Mountain Reservation, Woodland Park, NJ, United StatesSpring migration at one of the state’s best migrant traps. Lots of songbirds including thrushes, vireos, sparrows, and warblers. Garret Mountain can be a terrific spot for songbird migration in spring, and its location on the Watchung Ridge means some days there are raptors overhead as well. Be prepared for 4 hours of leisurely walking over uneven terrain. Led by Carole Hughes and Chris Daly. A NOTE ON MEETING LOCATION! Please use 8 Mountain Ave, Woodland Park, NJ as a navigation address. Once you enter the park from Mountain Ave, go right (it’s a one-way road), and the meeting place/parking lot is the first lot immediately on your left. Sandy Hook
Sandy Hook - Lot B Hartshorne Drive, Sandy Hook, NJ, United StatesSpring migration at the hook; we may see a wide range of species from wading birds to raptors to songbirds at this regional hotspot. Spring birding at the hook for migrants. The wide variety of habitats here ensures a good diversity of bird species from herons and egrets to shorebirds, hawks, and songbirds. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking over flat and sometimes sandy terrain. Meet at parking lot B by the bathrooms. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. Island Beach State Park
Island Beach State Park - Park Entrance Median Parking Lot Central Ave, Seaside Park, NJ, United StatesSearch maritime forest for migrant vireos, tanagers, and warblers. We’ll also spend time checking out waterbirds in the marshes. Spring birding at one the state’s most beautiful parks. We’ll look for migrant songbirds and survey bayside wetlands for a variety of waterbirds including herons, ibis, and terns. There is a $5 entry fee to the park if you don’t have a state park pass, vax pass, or are less than 62 years old. Be prepared for a good amount of walking over flat and sandy terrain.
