Fishing Basics
Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve 1 Nature Preserve Way, Franklin Lakes NJ, NJ, United StatesJoin Lorrimer Sanctuary staff at the Franklin Lakes Preserve for a Fishing Basics, a beginner’s fishing program on Tuesday August 22nd. We'll cover the basics like: types of reels and rods, how to tie on a hook, casting techniques, types of baits and lures, AND you'll get the chance to try your luck at fishing! Rods and tackle will be available to share, but you are welcome to bring your own. Open to learners of all ages, under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, not a drop off program. Nature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesHelp pull a seine net through the Cape May Harbor to see first-hand what creatures inhabit the waters. Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of Cape May Harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, and about the fascinating and ancient Horseshoe Crab. A great family outing! Pre-registration is required COST: $12 adults, $6 children ages 3-12, children under 3 free. Limited to groups of up to 20 participants during this time. Children may not participate without an adult. Contact us at 609.427.3045 for private group tours and rates. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Meet 5-10 minutes prior to your program time at the picnic tables in front of the Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over rocky and sandy area. Please bring necessary footwear, sunscreen, bug spray, water bottle, and other belongings with you that you may need. Beachcombing the Cove
Sunset Pavilion 62 Beach Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesWalk the Cove with a naturalist to discover the gifts the sea leaves behind at the water's edge. Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats — the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll search the shallows, comb the shoreline for treasures, and walk along the dunes in search of wildlife. Natural Habitats Trolley Tour

Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Rd, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesLed by Dorothy Smullen, Teacher/Naturalist, former president of the New Jersey Mycological Association Join Dorothy for a “talk and walk” to discover the fascinating world of fungi. Fungi have been used for thousands of years by humans, not only as food but as medicine, fire-starters, insect repellants, decoration, for religious ceremonies and more. Fungi are very important to forests. Not only are they decomposers and recyclers in the forest ecosystem, but they also connect to tree roots – a mutualistic symbiosis that allows trees to communicate with each other. After a talk and display about fungi fun facts, we will walk the trails to look for the diverse groups of mushrooms and fungi. Hand-outs available. One person per ticket.
