Constellations and Cocoa
Enjoy the natural beauty of the stars at night, learn about the winter constellations, and warm up with a cup of hot cocoa! Visit Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary for this after-dark program all about the stars! We'll be looking up as we learn all about the winter constellations and their myths as we sip on hot cocoa during this family-friendly program. The first part of this event will take place indoors, then we will head outside to observe the stars. Please dress appropriately. This event is weather dependent and will be cancelled if there is rain or cloud cover, participants will be notified of cancellations by 5:00 PM. COST: $8 members / $10 nonmembers IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Dress for the weather CANCELLATION: NJ Audubon’s programs require a minimum number of registrants to run. If we cancel, due to lack of participation, severe weather, or unforeseen circumstances, all participants will be notified as soon as possible and are eligible for a full refund. Winter Tree ID: Buds, Bark, and Branches
Learn how to ID native tree species in winter by looking at the 3 "B's" - buds, bark, and branches! Join a Lorrimer Sanctuary naturalist for a brief hike as we talk about the native tree species that provide food and shelter for wildlife, as well as how to ID them after their leaves have fallen. We will focus on learning to identify the 3 “B’s” – Buds, Bark, and Branches! Bundle up! This class will be held entirely outdoors. NJ Young Birders Club-DeKorte Park (NJ Meadowlands)
See wintering waterfowl, gulls, and birds of prey at this productive urban oasis. Open to youth 11-17 yrs old with parent/guardian. The wetlands and uplands of DeKorte can provide an excellent birding experience where a wide range of species including geese, ducks, gulls, and raptors may be viewed. Patches of trees and shrubs provide refuge for landbirds. Some birds we'll search for include many ducks including Norther Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Canvasback; plus a chance for a rare gull and raptors like Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, Bald Eagle, and Peregrine Falcon. Be prepared for walking over flat terrain and possibly cold weather. We will spend three hours on our feet at traveling at a leisurely pace. Led by Scott Barnes and Mary Birrer. Welcome to the Summer Camp Open House! Join us at New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary for your chance to learn all about our exciting summer camp programs at two of our local nature centers! Staff from both Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary and Lorrimer Sanctuary will be available to share all about the unique summer camp experiences. You can ask any questions you may have, meet our staff and ambassador animals, and join in on some craft projects. Whether you're a returning camper or thinking about joining us for the first time, this event is the perfect opportunity to get a taste of what summer with New Jersey Audubon is all about. Join NJA staff for an educational and fun walk in the woods to learn about and identify NJ's many native tree species! Welcome to the Tree ID Walk at Borg's Woods Nature Preserve! Join us for a leisurely walk through the trails at Borg's Woods to observe and learn all about identification of NJ's native trees, led by an expert NJ Audubon staff member. This event is a great opportunity to enjoy nature, learn about local flora, and meet fellow nature enthusiasts. We look forward to seeing you there! COST:$8 members, $10 nonmembers.
