Sounds of Spring

May 6 @ 7:00 am - May 7 @ 4:00 pm

Join Michael O’Brien for this two-day workshop learning about bird song and how easy it can be to get your “ear in”! Of all the different elements involved in birdwatching, perhaps learning the vocalizations of our breeding birds is the most difficult to master. Many birders dream of learning such songs and calls – and most birders can. Experienced birders spend time each spring getting their “ear in” and re-learning songs they already know. On this workshop, Michael O’Brien, primary author of the Larkwire birdsong learning app, will help you to develop your audio recall, learn how to listen critically, how to group and categorize songs, and gain confidence and skill as your song and call repertoires grow. Many of southern NJ’s breeding birds will be back and singing heartily, while a range of migrants will join the chorus too. Whether you consider yourself a novice, learning bird sounds for the first time, whether you are looking to increase the spectrum of sounds that you can recognize, or whether you simply want a refresher course, this workshop offers you a fine opportunity to learn from the experts.

Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May and beyond that regularly hold good numbers of birds. Final location decisions will be made by the leader based on local knowledge and conditions at the time. We may walk up to 2 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain.

Participants may cancel without penalty if greater than 30 days in advance. Cancellations 10 to 30 days in advance may be subject to a 25% service charge.
