The Digital Thermal Camera allows the user to observe nocturnal birds such as owls, monitor the migration patterns of nocturnal species and detect roosting birds in trees. Using keys, field guides, Powerpoint presentations, and a trail walk we will cover the basics of identification, and learn about the importance of fungi for the ecosystem and the future. Fungi have been used for thousands of years by humans, not only as food but as medicine, fire-starters, insect repellants, decoration, for religious ceremonies and more. Fungi are very important to forests. Not only are they decomposers and recyclers in the forest ecosystem, but they also connect to tree roots – a mutualistic symbiosis that might allow trees to communicate with each other. After a talk and display about fungi fun facts, we will walk the trails to look for the diverse groups of mushrooms and fungi. Hand-outs available. One person per ticket.
