A little drizzle did not deter our spirited group of young birders as we hiked around Petty’s Island on April 28th, 2019. This was the first Young Birders Club trip to the island located on the Delaware River, between the cities of Camden and Philadelphia. Participants were able to witness the island in transition from petroleum industry to nature preserve.
Our morning was filled with a variety of birds, amounting to 58 species. Highlights included impressive numbers of Yellow Warblers and Warbling Vireos, a lone (and late) White-winged Scoter, a Northern Harrier flying high across the river, and a convenient comparison of Greater to Lesser Yellowlegs. We were thrilled to discover such a diversity of birds and other wildlife utilizing the urban oasis of Petty’s Island.
A special thanks to Zeiss Sport Optics for their generous support of the New Jersey Young Birders Club.
