Commitment to Safe and Welcoming Access to Nature for All

Dear Members and Supporters,

We are both saddened and shaken by recent allegations of sexual harassment and assault that have occurred within the birding and conservation communities. The natural world has always been a sanctuary, particularly during this past year of isolation and closure. While these allegations in no way involve New Jersey Audubon, and we cannot speak to the details of the allegations, it is important for us to speak to our core values. It is our belief at New Jersey Audubon that every person has the fundamental right to safe, welcoming, and positive experiences in nature. These must be free of violence, threat, harassment, or harm.

It is our mission to connect ALL people with nature and steward the nature of today for ALL people of tomorrow. Any behaviors that threaten our values and mission will not be tolerated by New Jersey Audubon.

While recent events have reinforced the disturbing reality that not everyone is or feels safe or welcome in nature, New Jersey Audubon remains firm in its commitment to Nature for All. We continue to work tirelessly to ensure our workplaces, programs, and natural spaces are safe and welcoming for all.

The About Us / Who We Are section of our website has been updated to reflect these commitments..

Nature is where we turn for comfort and serenity. We are all dependent on our natural world for the health, education, recreation, social, and economic benefits it provides. Ensuring that every individual has safe and welcoming access to nature without fear of sexual or gender-based assaults, harassment, intimidation, or bias is and has been essential to our mission and values. As New Jersey Audubon advances its efforts to protect wildlife, restore habitats, and provide meaningful experiences in nature for all, our focus will remain on safety and inclusivity to achieve our goals.

Sincerely,
