Birding Cape May Point – April 5, 2025

Leaders: Roger Horn, Holly & Mark Lemieux.

Temp: 41° F

Winds:  NE 14 mph

Weather Conditions: rain

Drizzly morning walk at Cape May Point State Park. Spring is here though it didn’t feel like it as cold east winds kept migration down overnight. We started our walk down the Red trail and had a flock of Great Egrets and a few Snowy Egrets on Lighthouse Pond.

The Blue and Yellow trails had the usual cast of Northern Cardinals, Northern Flickers and a Brown Thrasher chortled loudly while only allowing us a glimpse of itself. Red-winged Blackbirds sang profusely along the Reeds while Field Sparrows and Yellow-rumped Warblers fed on the ground near the “plover ponds”.

We viewed from the dune overlook Common Loons, Red-throated Loons Red-breasted Mergansers and a few Northern Gannets in and over the waters. The Surf and Black Scoters continue to fly north out of the bay. 40 species.,”Not too shabby”.
