8:30 am

Whittingham Wildlife Management Area (Postponed)

May 16 @ 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
NJ United States

Led by Dave Oster, Associate Naturalist. Whittingham WMA, located between Andover and Newton in Sussex County, is a 1,500 acre property featuring fields, woods, limestone outcroppings and a wetland area known as Big Spring. We will explore all of these habitats looking for migrant and nesting species, which should include a variety of flycatchers, vireos and warblers, as well as field sparrow. We will keep eyes and ears open for Prothonotary Warbler, which has nested at Whittingham in the past. The marshy area around Big Spring may have Green heron, wood duck or other wetland birds. A highlight of Whittingham is the uncommon and unusual walking fern, which grows on limestone rock in various areas. We'll locate some of these ferns and observe their rather unique method of propagation. Cost: $10 members, $15 nonmembers. To register please call 908-396-6386. Please meet at the parking area off Fredon Road, in the northern portion of Whittingham. From Route 80 West take exit 25 to Rt 206 North. Proceed approximately 9 miles north and turn left on Fredon Road (Rt 618.) Go about 1.4 miles on Fredon Road and turn left. In about 0.4 miles park in the small parking area on the left.
