Barnegat Lighthouse State Park

Harlequins & other sea ducks; plus, loons and gannets. We'll visit some nearby bayside spots after birding the inlet for additional species. Early winter birding for Harlequin Ducks, eiders, and scoters. In some years seabird migration is still underway, and we may also see many gulls, loons and gannets. The beaches may host Horned Larks, Am. Pipits, and/or Snow Buntings. After birding the lighthouse/inlet area, we'll caravan to nearby bayside spots for more species. Island Beach State Park

NJ, United States

This beautiful park can be great for a wide variety of migrant birds from shorebirds to waders, falcons, thrushes & warblers. One of the This beautiful park can be great for early winter waterfowl, seabirds, and birds of prey. We'll also look for Snow Buntings and Horned Larks. Our focus will be on waterbirds at this beautiful and productive park. We’ll search for a variety of scoters, maybe some eiders, other ducks, loons, grebes, and gulls from various spots overlooking the ocean and Barnegat Bay. Raptors, sparrows, and perhaps some Snow Buntings or even a Lapland Longspur may be present along the beaches. There is a $5 entry fee for NJ residents who do not have a state park pass. Persons 65 years of age or older get free entry. Be prepared for several hours of walking on flat terrain, sometimes sandy. Bring lunch. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack A NOTE ON MEETING LOCATION! Kick Off Your Year List-Sandy Hook

Sandy Hook - Lot B Hartshorne Drive, Sandy Hook, NJ, United States

Start the year off with some coastal birding at Sandy Hook looking for waterfowl, loons, grebes, and gulls. Start the year out with some coastal birding at Sandy Hook where we’ll look for sea ducks and Snow Buntings. If we're lucky we could find a Razorbill or two. We may also drop south and bird locations in Monmouth Beach and Long Branch for waterfowl, loons, and gulls. Bring lunch and be prepared for a few hours of walking over flat and sandy terrain. North Shore Ponds & Inlets

Point Pleasant - Broadway Public Parking lot 3 Broadway, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, United States

The inlets and ponds in this area can be great for a variety of winter birds including ducks, loons, gulls and maybe alcids. The "north shore" between Point Pleasant Beach and Belmar can make for great winter birding. We'll search the inlets, ponds, and oceanfront for a variety of ducks, loons, gulls, and more. In some years Razorbills or other rarer alcids may be present, and the tour can be good for "white-winged" gulls.  Meet at the east end of Broadway in Point Pleasant Beach. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, and lunch. Dress warmly. This trip requires little walking. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. Assunpink WMA

Lake Assunpink Boat Launch NJ, United States

Waterfowl, wintering thrushes, sparrows, and other land birds at this productive central jersey hotspot. This productive locale has a mix of fields, woods, wetlands, and lakes. We may see a good variety of waterfowl, sparrows, and other land birds. In recent years a pair of Trumpeter Swans has wintered here. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, warm clothing, and lunch. Meet at the Lake Assunpink Boat Launch just north of the intersection of Imlaystown Rd and Clarksburg-Robbinsville Rd. NOTE: there are no restrooms at Assunpink, so plan accordingly. Sometimes there is one port-a-john available. Led by Scott Barnes and Carole Hughes. Winter birding at the hook. We'll search for a variety of birds including waterfowl, loons, grebes, raptors & sparrows. Winter birding at the hook: we may encounter big flocks of sea ducks, gulls, raptors, and possibly Horned Larks and Snow Buntings. We may also drop south and bird ocean spots in Monmouth Beach and Long Branch. Meet at Sandy Hook Parking Area B, about halfway down the lot by the bathrooms. South Mountain Reservation Birding Meander

South Mountain Reservation - Oakdale Lot just past the Regatta Playground on the left coming from Northfield Ave side. Cherry Lane, Cherry Lane, Cherry Lane, Cherry Lane, West Orange, NJ, United States

We will hike several trails in search of wintering songbirds. Target species include both woodland passerines and ducks on the reservoir. We hope to find wintering birds around the reservoir, in hillside forests, and on meadow edges in this very large, well-preserved park. Led by Associate Naturalist Dave Hall.
