Assunpink WMA
Lake Assunpink Boat Launch NJ, United StatesWaterfowl, wintering thrushes, sparrows, and other land birds at this productive central jersey hotspot. This productive locale has a mix of fields, woods, wetlands, and lakes. We may see a good variety of waterfowl, sparrows, and other land birds. In recent years a pair of Trumpeter Swans has wintered here. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, warm clothing, and lunch. Meet at the Lake Assunpink Boat Launch just north of the intersection of Imlaystown Rd and Clarksburg-Robbinsville Rd. NOTE: there are no restrooms at Assunpink, so plan accordingly. Sandy Hook
Sandy Hook - Lot B Hartshorne Drive, Sandy Hook, NJ, United StatesWinter birding at the hook. We'll search for a variety of birds including waterfowl, loons, grebes, raptors & sparrows. Winter birding at the hook: we may encounter big flocks of sea ducks, gulls, raptors, and possibly Horned Larks and Snow Buntings. We may also drop south and bird ocean spots in Monmouth Beach and Long Branch. Meet at Sandy Hook Parking Area B, about halfway down the lot by the bathrooms. NJ Young Birders Club-North Shore Ponds & Inlets
Point Pleasant - Broadway Public Parking lot 3 Broadway, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, United StatesThe inlets and ponds in this area can be great for a variety of winter birds including ducks, loons, gulls and maybe alcids. The "north shore" between Point Pleasant Beach and Belmar can make for great winter birding. We'll search the inlets, ponds, and oceanfront for a variety of ducks, loons, gulls, and more. In some years Razorbills or other rarer alcids may be present, and the tour can be good for "white-winged" gulls. Meet at the east end of Broadway in Point Pleasant Beach. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, and lunch. Dress warmly. This trip requires little walking. For young birders ages 11-17 plus parent/guardian. Led by Scott Barnes and Carole Hughes. Barnegat Lighthouse State Park
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park Broadway, Barnegat Light, NJ, United StatesHarlequins & other sea ducks; plus, loons and gannets. We'll visit some nearby bayside spots after birding the inlet for additional species. Early winter birding for Harlequin Ducks, eiders, and scoters. In some years seabird migration is still underway, and we may also see many gulls, loons and gannets. The beaches may host Horned Larks, Am. Pipits, and/or Snow Buntings. After birding the lighthouse/inlet area, we'll caravan to nearby bayside spots for more species. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one, lunch, and dress warmly! South Mountain Reservation Birding Meander
South Mountain Reservation - Oakdale Lot just past the Regatta Playground on the left coming from Northfield Ave side. Cherry Lane, Cherry Lane, Cherry Lane, Cherry Lane, West Orange, NJ, United StatesWe will hike several trails in search of wintering songbirds. Target species include both woodland passerines and ducks on the reservoir. We hope to find wintering birds around the reservoir, in hillside forests, and on meadow edges in this very large, well-preserved park. Led by Associate Naturalist Dave Hall. Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR
Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, NJ, United StatesSpend a winter afternoon birding at "Brig." Expect good numbers of ducks, geese, and swans. We'll end by looking for nocturnal birds. This afternoon trip will begin by looking for wintering waterfowl and birds of prey. Dusk can be an excellent time to see nocturnal species "waking up," and may include rails, American Bittern, and possibly American Woodcock or Short-eared Owl. Ken Buchanan Park-gulls & raptors
Ken Buchanan Riverfront Park Sayreville Blvd, Sayreville, NJ, United StatesThis park overlooks productive tidal marsh where ducks, gulls, and raptors congregate during the winter. Ken Buchanan Riverfront Park gives a great view of Sayreville Marsh and the Raritan River. The marshes may have raptors including Northern Harrier, Bald Eagle, and sometimes Rough-legged Hawk. The waters of the river are good for ducks and Great Cormorants. We'll spend a good amount of time sorting and sifting through the thousands of gulls that congregate here--most winters there are multiple Iceland and Glaucous Gulls present. Time permitting, we may caravan to nearby Raritan Bay Waterfront Park for more birding. Bring binoculars, spotting scope if you have one and dress warmly. There are no open restrooms at the park. Sandy Hook
Sandy Hook - Lot B Hartshorne Drive, Sandy Hook, NJ, United StatesEarly spring migration at “the hook.” If the winds are right, we could have a good flight of hawks, swallows, and other migrants. The wide variety of habitats here ensures a good diversity of bird species from herons and egrets to shorebirds, hawks, and songbirds.
