Explore varied habitats for a wide variety of birds including raptors, sparrows and more. Footing may be wet. Mannington Marsh and Environs
Wawa Parking Lot - Woodstown NJ 896 NJ-45, Woodstown, NJ, United StatesMarch brings a good mix of waterfowl, herons, egrets, some shorebirds & early songbirds to this productive and rural part of NJ. Mannington Marsh can hold a good variety of ducks, herons, and egrets, plus shorebirds. There are usually plenty of Bald Eagles around and a resident pair of Sandhill Cranes. Early spring migrants like swallows, kinglets, and sparrows may be present. We’ll also visit other nearby areas including Featherbed Lane. Led by Scott Barnes, Linda Mack, and associate naturalists. Hilltop Reservation Courter Ln, North Caldwell, NJ, United StatesTake a leisurely winter hike while looking for winter wildlife, especially field and forest birds. Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR
Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge Admin Building And Visitor Contact Station 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, NJ, United StatesLate winter birding at one of the state's best hotspots. Expect good numbers of ducks, geese, and swans, plus eagles and other raptors. This can be an excellent time of year at “Brig,” when eagles and other raptors are in evidence, plus large numbers of geese and ducks. We may also find sparrows and other songbirds along the dikes and keep our eyes out for secretive marsh birds like American Bittern and rails. Bring lunch and weather appropriate clothing. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park
Raritan Bay Waterfront Park 201 John T O'Leary Boulevard, South Amboy, NJ, United StatesRaritan Bay Waterfront Park has long been known as a concentration point for Bonaparte's Gulls in spring. If we're lucky a Little Gull or Black-headed Gull could be among them. The bay usually hosts a variety of waterbirds in early spring and some landbird migrants could be around. Once you enter the park, go north and park at the end of the lot close to the bay. Be prepared for easy walking for 3 hours. Restrooms on site. Led by Scott Barnes and Hank Burk. Sandy Hook Birding
Sandy Hook - Lot B Hartshorne Drive, Sandy Hook, NJ, United StatesEarly spring migration at “the hook.” If the winds are right, we could have a good flight of hawks, and swallows, and songbirds. A transitional time of year when we should see waterfowl, loons, and gulls plus early spring arrivals that may include Piping Plover. If the winds are right, we could get a flight of vultures and hawks. Bring lunch and weather appropriate clothing. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. NJ Young Birders Club-Cape May Spring Watch
Cape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesThis trip is designed to introduce young birders to a migration count, where observers conduct an organized count of migratory birds passing by a particular point. We'll watch for waterfowl, loons, gannets, gulls, and early spring songbirds. We may also spend time birding Cape May Point State Park's many habitats. Led by Adehl Schwaderer, Program Coordinator, and Kristal Stahler, George Meyers Naturalist Cape May Bird Observatory. Location: Meets at the Cape May Point State Park. Join NJ Audubon Program Director Scott Barnes and associate naturalists for a leisurely walk at the sanctuary. We’ll look for woodpeckers, thrushes and warblers in the woods and wetland birds like herons, egrets, and Ospreys along the Rahway River. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather.
