NJ Young Birders Club-DeKorte Park (NJ Meadowlands)
Richard W. DeKorte Park 1 DeKorte Park, Lyndhurst, NJ, United StatesSee wintering waterfowl, gulls, and birds of prey at this productive urban oasis. Open to youth 11-17 yrs old with parent/guardian. The wetlands and uplands of DeKorte can provide an excellent birding experience where a wide range of species including geese, ducks, gulls, and raptors may be viewed. Patches of trees and shrubs provide refuge for landbirds. Some birds we'll search for include many ducks including Norther Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Canvasback; plus a chance for a rare gull and raptors like Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, Bald Eagle, and Peregrine Falcon. Be prepared for walking over flat terrain and possibly cold weather. We will spend three hours on our feet at traveling at a leisurely pace. Led by Scott Barnes and Mary Birrer. Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR
Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge Admin Building And Visitor Contact Station 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, NJ, United StatesThis can be an excellent time of year at “Brig,” when eagles and other raptors are in evidence, plus large numbers of geese and ducks. We may also find sparrows and other songbirds along the dikes and keep our eyes out for secretive marsh birds like American Bittern and rails. Bring lunch and weather appropriate clothing. Raritan Bay Waterfront Park
Raritan Bay Waterfront Park 201 John T O'Leary Boulevard, South Amboy, NJ, United StatesEarly spring can be a good time to see a diversity of ducks, loons, and grebes at this easily accessible park. This is also a good place for many species of gulls, especially Bonaparte's Gulls that sometimes contain rarer species. We might luck into some raptors including Bald Eagle, Peregrine, and more. Be prepared for 3+ hours of easy walking and standing. Restrooms on site. Led by Scott Barnes and Hank Burk. NJ Young Birders Club-Cape May Spring Watch
Cape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesSee and learn about migratory species including waterfowl, loons, gannets, and more on Cape Island during spring migration. We'll search for waterfowl, loons, gannets, gulls, and early spring songbirds at Cape May Point State Park's many habitats. We will introduce young birders to Cape May Spring Watch Count, where observers conduct an organized count of migratory birds passing by a particular point. Led by Adehl Schwaderer, Program Coordinator, and the George Meyers Naturalist, Cape May Bird Observatory. Location: Meets at the Cape May Point State Park. We'll meet in front of the Hawkwatch Platform located across the large parking lot, opposite the Cape May Point Lighthouse. Spring Birding at Hawk Rise Sanctuary
Hawk Rise Sanctuary 1811 Lower Rd, Linden, NJ, United StatesExplore the various habitats at Hawk Rise Sanctuary to look for spring migrants. Join NJ Audubon Program Director Scott Barnes and associate naturalists for a leisurely walk at the sanctuary. We’ll look for woodpeckers, thrushes and warblers in the woods and wetland birds like herons, egrets, and Ospreys along the Rahway River. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather.
