Belleplain State Forest 1 Henkensifkin Rd, WoodbineJoin CMBO naturalists for 3 hours of birding in Belleplain State Forest! The varied habitats of this wonderful forest yield an amazing diversity of spring migrants and breeders. Highlights including Summer Tanager, Hooded Warbler, Acadian Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Yellow-billed Cuckoo, are near the northern limit of their breeding range in Belleplain. Explore the numerous grassy paths through The Nature Conservancy’s Garrett Family Preserve. Located along Cape Island Creek, this hidden gem holds warblers, sparrows and much more, including great views of the tidal marsh and the birds within. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. Spring Migration Bird Walks
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin LakesGrab your binoculars, it's spring migration! As the days warm, join us for a morning walk as we search for migrating birds like warblers! Learn how to identify and listen for bird species of all kinds during this hour-long birding program. From the end of April through early June, we'll walk the trails at Lorrimer Sanctuary looking for birds of all kinds including beautiful migratory warbler species that will only stop in NJ for a short time on their way north. This program is open to all birders, from beginner to experienced! COST: $8 members / $10 nonmembers IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Dress for the weather. This program is entirely outdoors. Becker Farm Birding Walk
Locust Avenue Locust Avenue, RoselandExplore both field and forest while enjoying beautiful vistas of the Passaic River Valley. This is the right time to discover spring migrants in all their glory, including warblers in full song. Becker Farm dates back to 1880 when it was a farm. Over the years this farm added its famous railroad which entertained families for over 30 years. The now abandoned farm is a great place to spot grassland birds. Location: Meet at the south end of Locust Ave in Roseland, NJ. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED COST: $10 members, $15 nonmembers. REGISTER HERE
NJ Young Birders Club-Garret Mountain Reservation
Garrett Mountain Reservation - Three-Tiered Parking Lot Garrett Mountain Reservation, Woodland ParkSpring migration at one of the state’s best migrant traps. Lots of songbirds including thrushes, vireos, sparrows, and warblers. Garret Mountain can be a terrific spot for songbird migration in spring, and its location on the Watchung Ridge means some days there are raptors overhead as well. Be prepared for 4 hours of leisurely walking over uneven terrain. Led by Carole Hughes and Emma Price. Location: Please use 8 Mountain Ave, Woodland Park, NJ as a navigation address. Once you enter the park from Mountain Ave, go right (it’s a one-way road), and the meeting place/parking lot is the first lot immediately on your left. Island Beach State Park
Island Beach State Park - Park Entrance Median Parking Lot Central Ave, Seaside ParkSearch maritime forest for migrant vireos, tanagers, and warblers. We’ll also spend time checking out waterbirds in the marshes. Spring birding at one the state’s most beautiful parks. We’ll look for migrant songbirds and survey bayside wetlands for a variety of waterbirds including herons, ibis, and terns. There is a $5 entry fee to the park if you don’t have a state park pass, vax pass, or are less than 62 years old. Be prepared for a good amount of walking over flat and sandy terrain. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. A NOTE ON MEETING LOCATION! We'll meet just outside of the park entrance, in the median parking lot at the end of Rt. 35. Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR
Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge 800 Great Creek Road, GallowaySpring birding at one of the state's best hotspots. Expect good numbers of ducks, long-legged wading birds, plus shorebirds and songbirds. Early May brings many herons, egrets, and shorebirds to the refuge, as well as returning breeding species. We may also find sparrows and other songbirds along the dikes and keep our eyes out for secretive marsh birds like bitterns and rails. Bring lunch and weather appropriate clothing.
