The varied habitats of this wonderful forest yield an amazing diversity of spring migrants and breeders. Highlights including Summer Tanager, Hooded Warbler, Acadian Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Yellow-billed Cuckoo, are near the northern limit of their breeding range in Belleplain. Shorebirds at Heislerville

The impoundment at Heislerville has become a spring legend, attracting rarities, plus zillions of shorebirds. Depending on the tide conditions, we may visit nearby East Point or Thompson's Beach. Higbee Beach Birding
Higbee Beach WMA NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO naturalists for this 2-hour walk around the Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area! Famous for migration, we'll search for Blue Grosbeaks, Brown Thrashers, Yellow-breasted Chats, Yellow Warblers and White-eyed Vireos. All arrive in April to breed here. Salem County Birding Part One
Wawa Parking Lot - Woodstown NJ 896 NJ-45, Woodstown, NJ, United StatesSpring birding at productive Mannington Marsh, Featherbed Lane, and Supawna Meadows for waders, shorebirds, & other spring migrants. First of two days of birding Salem County. We’ll visit Mannington Marsh-one of the largest tidal freshwater marshes in the state-for waterfowl, herons, egrets, shorebirds Sandhill Cranes, and raptors. Agricultural areas and hedgerows at nearby sites including Featherbed Lane and Compromise Road may host more raptors, sparrows, and we’ll look for songbird migrants around Supawna Meadows NWR. Bring lunch and be prepared for some walking over flat terrain. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. Location: Meet at the Woodstown Wawa at the intersection of Routes 40 & 45. Birds in Flight – Spring Edition
Cape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO Migration Count Coordinator Tom Reed for a day of watching water and sky for northbound migrants. Cape May is synonymous with migration and birds in flight. This workshop takes place at a time of year when many species are on the move and flying past the Cape May peninsula on the way to their breeding territories. Depending on the weather this may include waterfowl, wading birds, raptors, shorebirds, swallows, songbirds, and much more. Join Tom Reed for a full day of watching water and sky for northbound migrants, while learning in-flight ID tips and more about the status & distribution of spring migrants at Cape May. As an added bonus, this session will also touch on the fundamentals of bird migration counts and how they are conducted, along with an introduction to the Cape May Springwatch program. Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds. Final location decisions will be made by the leader based on local knowledge and conditions at the time. We may walk up to 2 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Spring Migration Bird Walks

As the days warm, join us for a morning walk as we search for migrating birds like warblers! Learn how to identify and listen for bird species of all kinds during this hour-long birding program. From the end of April through early June, we'll walk the trails at Lorrimer Sanctuary looking for birds of all kinds including beautiful migratory warbler species that will only stop in NJ for a short time on their way north. The “shoulder season” in Cape May is a wonderful time for birding and there’s no better place to do it than the Cape May Point State Park. With its diversity of habitat – beach, dunes, ponds, forest, and marsh – it’s the perfect spot for migrating waterfowl, songbirds and shorebirds to stop and refuel as the push of spring migration begins. We’ll travel the trails, check out CMBO’s Northwood Center and other surrounding hotspots on The Point, as we soak up the wonder of this annual phenomenon of Nature. Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR
Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge 800 Great Creek Road, Galloway, NJ, United StatesSpring birding at one of the state's best hotspots. Expect good numbers of ducks, long-legged wading birds, plus shorebirds and songbirds. Mid-April brings many herons, egrets, and shorebirds to the refuge, as well as returning breeding species. We may also find sparrows and other songbirds along the dikes and keep our eyes out for secretive marsh birds like American Bittern and rails. Bring lunch and weather appropriate clothing.
