Birding Cape May Point
Cape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. So let us add some joy to your winter – join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding around Cape May Point. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. Sunday Morning at Turkey Point

We’ll explore the Glades Wildlife Refuge and Dividing Creek to enjoy wintering raptors, including lots of Bald Eagles, and wintering shorebirds, gulls and ducks, including Green-winged Teal, Bufflehead, Hooded Mergansers, Common Mergansers and Bonaparte’s Gulls. Winter Birding in Cape May
Avalon - 8th Street Parking Lot Avalon, NJ, United StatesNEW 2024!! Join Program Coordinator Adehl Schwaderer and CMBO naturalists on a search for wintering waterfowl from Avalon to Cape May! February is a wonderful time of year to seek out various species of waterfowl, as lingering winterers are joined by northbound migrants. We will travel through coastal and inland areas of Cape May County to find and enjoy a wide range of species, including scoters, mergansers, eiders, and many other ducks, plus a great array of shorebirds, cormorants, grebes. At each stop, we will take time to study various identification clues: plumage, size & shape, flight characteristics, and behavior to help improve your bird identification skills. This birding break has something to offer birders of all skill and experience levels. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. Troy Meadows Birding Walk
Search the edges of the swamp for wintering birds. Be prepared for muddy or icy conditions. We will carpool to the trail head. Troy Meadows in Parsippany/East Hanover is an excellent place to encounter wintering birds of prey, marsh birds, and woodland species. Footing can be wet. Birding on the Barrier Islands
Stone Harbor Point - 2nd Ave Parking Lot NJ, United StatesJoin Chris Marks and CMBO Naturalists, as we explore some of the iconic barrier islands in Cape May County! These long and narrow land strips are teeming with a variety of birds. For this trip, we’ll spend the majority of our time on Seven Mile Island, home to the boroughs of Stone Harbor and Avalon as well as amazing ocean views, dunes, and marshes. As we walk the beach at Stone Harbor Point, we’ll look for wintering shorebirds, gulls, and sparrows. The Avalon jetty is a great spot to try for winter goodies such as Great Cormorant and Purple Sandpiper as well as migrating scoters, loons, and other waterfowl. We may also try for salty sparrows such as Nelson’s and Saltmarsh Sparrow on Nummy Island. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. The varied habitats of Forsythe NWR assure a good variety of species from ducks to raptors and sparrows. This a good time of year for eagles, hawks, and other birds of prey. To make this day even more special, we will be attempting to track down 100 species before the day ends. A lofty goal for the month of February, or is it technically March? However, with the local knowledge of Adehl Schwaderer, CMBO’s Program Coordinator, and our skilled Associate Naturalists, Roger & Kathy Horn, we stand a chance of making it happen! This full day special field trip has something to offer birders of all skill and experience levels. Woodcock Dance
Join Migration Count Coordinator Tom Reed and CMBO Naturalists to observe the yearly dance or nuptial flight of the male American Woodcock! There’s something about the peculiar, crepuscular ‘peeent’ of a woodcock that captures the imagination. It’s such a distinctive sound of spring, yet many people hear it and never find out what it is! This program begins with an indoor session that looks at the life of the American Woodcock, followed by a trip out to a reliable viewing location for this enigmatic bird. A small flashlight may be helpful toward the end of the trip for walking back to vehicles. -We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions and recent bird sightings.
