Spring Migration Bird Walks
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesGrab your binoculars, it's spring migration! As the days warm, join us for a morning walk as we search for migrating birds like warblers! Learn how to identify and listen for bird species of all kinds during this hour-long birding program. From March-May, we'll walk the trails at Lorrimer Sanctuary looking for birds of all kinds including beautiful migratory warbler species that will only stopover in NJ for a short time on their way north. This program is open to all birders, from beginner to experienced! Dress appropriately for the weather! We will be outdoors the entire time. COST: $8 members / $10 nonmembers IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Dress for the weather. This program is entirely outdoors. Garret Mountain Reservation
Garrett Mountain Reservation - Three-Tiered Parking Lot Garrett Mountain Reservation, Woodland Park, NJ, United StatesSpring migration at one of the state’s best migrant traps. Lots of songbirds including thrushes, vireos, sparrows, and warblers. Garret Mountain can be a terrific spot for songbird migration in spring, and its location on the Watchung Ridge means some days there are raptors overhead as well. Be prepared for 4 hours of leisurely walking over uneven terrain. Led by Carole Hughes and Chris Daly. A NOTE ON MEETING LOCATION! Please use 8 Mountain Ave, Woodland Park, NJ as a navigation address. Once you enter the park from Mountain Ave, go right (it’s a one-way road), and the meeting place/parking lot is the first lot immediately on your left. Lorrimer Tiny Tots World Series of Birding!
Lorrimer Sanctuary 790 Ewing Avenue, Franklin Lakes, NJ, United StatesJoin us for a fun-filled 2 hours of learning about the birds that call Lorrimer home! This is our World Series of Birding Day for kids 1-6! Our Lorrimer Tiny Tot Birders will come together and search the woods for birds of every shape and color! Make your own binoculars, learn your favorite bird song, and see lots of different kinds of birds (and plenty of other wildlife!) as we learn and play. Sandy Hook
Sandy Hook - Lot B Hartshorne Drive, Sandy Hook, NJ, United StatesSpring migration at the hook; we may see a wide range of species from wading birds to raptors to songbirds at this regional hotspot. Spring birding at the hook for migrants. The wide variety of habitats here ensures a good diversity of bird species from herons and egrets to shorebirds, hawks, and songbirds. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking over flat and sometimes sandy terrain. Meet at parking lot B by the bathrooms. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. A Meadows Afternoon
The Nature Conservancy's South Cape May Meadows 692 Sunset Blvd, Cape May, NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO naturalists for this 2-hour afternoon walk around The Nature Conservancy's South Cape May Meadows property! Seasonally flooded ponds attract ducks and shorebirds, while beach nesters like Least Terns and American Oystercatchers will be back and busy SPOTTING SCOPES ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR THIS TRIP PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. We may have to bird in the rain, so please bring your rain gear. TRANSPORTATION: We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Spring Birding at Hawk Rise Sanctuary
Hawk Rise Sanctuary 1811 Lower Rd, Linden, NJ, United StatesExplore the various habitats at Hawk Rise Sanctuary to look for spring migrants. Join NJ Audubon Program Director Scott Barnes and associate naturalists for a leisurely walk at the sanctuary. Branch Brook Park Birding Walk
Cherry Blossom Welcome Center Branch Brook Park Drive, Newark, NJ, United StatesExplore an iconic urban park. This is the right time to enjoy cherry trees in bloom and to discover early spring migrants in all their glory, including warblers in full song. Branch Brook Park is distinguished by being the first county park to be opened for public use in the United States. It has been placed on both the New Jersey (1980) and National (1981) Registers of Historic Places. Named for a branch brook that flowed through the valley into the Passaic River, the stream that remains, and much of the surrounding landscape, still retain a natural appearance. More than 4,000 cherry trees that blossom during April are greater both in variety and number than the famed Washington, D.C., display—the result of a 1927 gift from Mrs. Felix Fuld family. At its height the Cherry Blossom Festival attracts over 10,000 people a day.
