Birding Cape May Point
Cape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform Light House Avenue, Cape May Point, NJ, United StatesJoin CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! The “shoulder season” in Cape May is a wonderful time for birding and there’s no better place to do it than the Cape May Point State Park. With its diversity of habitat – beach, dunes, ponds, forest, and marsh – it’s the perfect spot for migrating waterfowl, songbirds and shorebirds to stop and refuel as the push of spring migration begins. We’ll travel the trails, check out CMBO’s Northwood Center and other surrounding hotspots on The Point, as we soak up the wonder of this annual phenomenon of Nature. Join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding at the Cape May Point State Park and let us share with you the wonder of this special time of year. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. Some trips involve walks over jetties. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. Do you have what it takes to be a birder? We will teach you all the foundational skills of birding- from using binoculars and spotting scopes to bird ID and more. Spend time exploring Cape May’s best birding hubs, plus enjoy classic summer camp-inspired games and activities throughout the sessions! Join us for one day or sign up for all three! SCHEDULE: April 6th: Hang out at the nature center for a morning jam-packed with summer-camp favorite activities. Learn the basics of using binoculars, play camp games, and search for shorebirds on the Cape May Harbor! April 8th: Take a field trip and explore some of Cape May’s best Spring Migration spots! Visit the Cape May Point State Park and the Cape May Springwatch to start adding new species to your “life list”. April 10th: Become a community scientist! Learn all about how you can help birds by studying them. Record the birds you spot so scientists can use your data for conservation! We'll explore the nature trail and feeding stations at our Northwood Center and enjoy lingering waterfowl and migrant songbirds along Lake Lily. Along with spotting migrant and resident species an emphasis will be placed on learning how to identify song and look for identifying field marks. Birds of Nummy Island
Nummy Island NJ, United StatesThis rich salt marsh is one of the best spots to observe hunting and breeding birds of all shapes and sizes. Our group will be scanning the crowded mudflats for Clapper Rails, American Oystercatchers, and a wide variety of migrant shorebirds. Ospreys, Black Skimmers, herons, egrets, and terns are often seen putting on a show while hunting along the island. Breeding Seaside Sparrows and wrens can also be heard from this same location! Depending on the weather, as well as the arrival and dispersal of these species, the group may also travel to Stone Harbor Point, The Wetlands Institute, and various locations in North Wildwood. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. MEETING LOCATION: The group will meet at the 2nd Ave parking lot at Stone Harbor Point, than travel to nearby Nummy Island. Higbee Beach Birding

Famous for migration, we'll search for Blue Grosbeaks, Brown Thrashers, Yellow-breasted Chats, Yellow Warblers and White-eyed Vireos. All arrive in April to breed here. Intro to Birding
FeaturedCape May Point State Park Hawkwatch Platform NJ, United StatesAre you just getting into birding and want to learn the basics? Join CMBO’s Program Coordinator, Adehl Schwaderer and CMBO Naturalists for an afternoon of deep diving into all things birding. We will review optics, identification tips, tricks for binoculars usage, and answer any questions you may have. We’ll visit several local hotspots to take in the early spring migrants while focusing on improving your bird identification out in the field. Geared towards beginners and those wishing to improve their knowledge and appreciation of birds and birding, helping you take it to the next level! We don’t pre-set an itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May that regularly hold good numbers of birds at this time of year. Final location decisions will be made by the leader, based on local knowledge and conditions at the time. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. A portion of the afternoon will involve an indoor session, with discussions on birdwatching and bird feeding gear/paraphernalia.
