Join us at Lorrimer Sanctuary once a month for nature-based art projects! Reimagined Landscapes: Nature-Based Collaging: Explore a new art form in our nature collaging workshop! Use your imagination to design unique shapes and landscapes by combining elements of craft and nature. Feel free to bring your own materials, but other supplies will be provided. Led by Teacher Naturalist and Artist Toni Stober. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Supplies will be provided This is an all ages event, not a drop off program: children must have an accompanying adult if under 16 years old This event will be both indoors and outdoors, please dress appropriately for the weather You must pre-register for each class you wish to attend. Join our tutorial game day and learn how to play Wingspan! Join our tutorial game day and learn how to play Wingspan! Wingspan is a popular, fun, nature-oriented board game chock full of bird facts and beautiful bird illustrations. Our tutorial session will focus on a review of game objectives, setup, player actions, and goals. No experience necessary. Recommended for adults due to the required reading ability, strategizing, and understanding of rules. After our session, join us for a half-hour walk around the Nature Center gardens and Cape May Harbor beach in search of bird species featured in the game. Loaner binoculars will be available. What is a Little Sit? A spin on the annual, international birding event The Big Sit, this event takes that idea and slows it down. Join the Nature Conservancy and the Cape May Bird Observatory staff for a fun, educational challenge to see how many birds we can identify from one location. In the fall, South Cape May Meadows is the perfect location to see migrating shorebirds, songbirds and raptors. As a part of this event, we will have benches for sitting, binoculars and spotting scopes for viewing, and educational materials to assist with bird identification. No matter your level of birding experience, you are welcome to help us add to our morning species total!! An ASL interpreter will be provided for this event. No need to pre-register, simply show up for a fun morning of birding! RAIN DATE will be Sunday October 4 Location Information: South Cape May Meadows, Sunset Blvd, Cape May, NJ. Native trees, shrubs and wildflowers will be available for sale during our annual Fall Native Plant Sale at the Scherman Hoffman Nature Center! Native plants benefit pollinators, such as bees and hummingbirds, and the caterpillars upon which both resident and migratory birds depend. Help create the habitat that is needed to attract wildlife to your backyard. Fall is the perfect time to plant perennials, shrubs and trees in order to give plants time to establish roots before the ground freezes, so that they are ready to flower and leaf out the following year. Some of the trees that will be available for sale include Common pawpaw, Eastern redbud and Common persimmon. Shrubs that will be available include Sweet pepperbush, American witch-hazel, Winterberry, Spicebush, Pussy willow, Elderberry, Steeplebush and Highbush blueberry. Flowering perennials that will be available include Swamp milkweed, Purple coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Wild ginger, Butterfly weed, and Cardinal flower. We will have Cinnamon fern available, as well as Trumpet vine, and many other species. Come early to find the plant that you are looking for. |

Join us Sunday, October 4th as we celebrate the opening of Wild Calm: NYC to NJ and Beyond, a stunning exhibit of paintings by artist Ingrid Marie Harbour, on view at Scherman Hoffman! Spanning the past decade, this collection captures the gardens and parks of Staten Island and Central New Jersey, a series of detailed bird portraits, and even a mini trip out West to Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. Many pieces were painted en plein air with loose, fast brushwork, while others began outdoors and were finished in-studio for a more polished style. Come meet Ingrid and experience her jewel-toned, site-responsive artwork that captures moments of calm amid the wild hustle and bustle of everyday life. Bring the whole family for an hour of nature-based crafting! On the second Saturday of every month, we will guide you through a nature-inspired craft! The whole family is invited to get in on the fun. Each ticket includes crafting supplies for one child. Crafts are best suited for children 6 years of age and older. Led by Diana Lapp, Inner Strength Counseling Services, LLC Take a mindful pause in nature and reconnect with yourself on this two-hour guided river walk for women. Beginning with grounding breathwork and meditation, you’ll then embark on a silent, slow-paced hike to the river, noticing sights, sounds, and sensations along the trail. Using the ACT-based “Leaves on a Stream” metaphor (ACT-Acceptance Commitment Therapy), each participant will collect a fallen leaf to symbolically release worries, self-doubt, or recurring thoughts into the flowing water. Journaling prompts and optional group conversation will help integrate the experience and explore new ways of relating to thoughts and stress. The walk concludes with a mindful return to the trailhead, giving you space to carry the calm and clarity back into daily life. Reconnect, reflect, and let go — your calm awaits by the river. What to bring: Water, appropriate footwear, and an optional blanket or mat. Journals and pens will be provided. Note: We move at the pace of the slowest hiker, so the walk’s end time may vary slightly. COST: $25 per participant. $5 from each registration will be donated to New Jersey Audubon in support of their conservation efforts and stewardship of local wildlife habitats. By participating, attendees are not only investing in their own well-being but also contributing to the preservation of the natural spaces that make reflection, restoration, and connection possible. Learn how to make apple cider using an old-fashioned cider press and make your own apple stamps at this hour-long family program! Join Lorrimer Sanctuary staff for a fun family program all about apple cider! We'll learn about apple trees and where apples come from, use an old-fashioned cider press to turn our apples into juice (and taste test some delicious and fresh local cider), and make an apple stamp craft too! Clean Ocean Action and the Nature Center of Cape May are collaborating to help clean our ocean and harbor beaches in Cape May. Join us at the Nature Center to help clean our ocean and harbor beaches here in Cape May. This date coincides with Clean Ocean Action’s annual Beach Sweeps. Additionally, we’ll plant, mulch, deadhead, weed, and prune throughout the Center’s grounds and along the harbor! This is a great community service project for your civic organization or scout group. Trade candy for binoculars this Halloween! Join us for a fall migration bird walk as we look for warblers, sparrows, raptors, and other feathered travelers passing through on their way south. This walk is designed for all skill levels — whether you've never picked up a pair of binoculars or you're a seasoned birder, you're welcome to join. Costumes are encouraged (comfortable footwear required — we recommend nothing that impedes hiking!). Come dressed as your favorite bird, a black cat, a scarecrow, or whatever spirit moves you. Binoculars and a scope will be available to borrow for those who don't have their own. You must register if you wish to attend. Ticket sales end at 5:00 PM on the day before the event.
