Join Nature Center of Cape May naturalists to unveil the flora and fauna lurking within the Cape May Harbor. Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of the harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, the natural history of the land, and examine the fascinating & ancient Horseshoe Crab. Perfect for families! Pre-registration is required. Grab your flashlights and get ready to behold an annual spring phenomenon: Horseshoe Crab spawning on the Cape May Harbor! Walk along the shoreline with a Nature Center Naturalist and learn all about Horseshoe Crab ecology and life history. Plus, help this keystone species by flipping them over while listening to the tale of Red Knots, an endangered species lovingly nicknamed the “Moon Bird”. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Children may not participate without an adult. Please bring flashlights (cell phone flashlights work too!). We may walk up to a mile, over generally level surfaces. Some surfaces may be sandy, slippery, or uneven. Please dress for the weather and wear waterproof footwear. Create Your Own Nature Journal: Make your very own nature journal by using craft supplies and materials from the Earth. You can assemble a notebook, a diary, or a sketchbook, the possibilities are endless! Bring back your nature journal to add more to each page for our future Nature Art Club events! Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats - the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. Join Captain Bob and the crew of The Osprey for close-up looks at secretive rails, nesting Ospreys, migrant shorebirds, terns, gulls, herons and more. We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible. From common garden weeds to well-known ornamental plants to native forest plants, this walk features something for everyone! Head out on a guided tour through our trails, where you'll encounter a variety of fascinating poisonous plants that have intrigued humans for thousands of years. Our knowledgeable staff will share anecdotes and cautionary tales about these cool (and occasionally sinister!) plants. Discover the secrets behind well-known plants like Foxglove, Bleeding Heart, and Nightshade as well as their less well-known peers!
