Led by Angus Macaulay, NJ Audubon Teacher Naturalist Start 2026 with a nature walk! Let the sights and sounds of nature usher in the New Year. Join us at Hawk Rise Sanctuary where we will observe and discuss the wildlife we encounter along the trails. Hot beverages will be provided afterwards. This program is appropriate for individuals of all ages. Come dressed for the weather. Ticket sale ends January 2 at 4:00 PM. Don’t let the chilly winter months keep you from spending time outside! Bundle up and join us for a family-friendly, sensory-focused nature walk! We will take a gentle stroll around the nature center trails, focusing on the sights, sounds, and textures of winter. We will identify trees, search for signs of wildlife, and collect a few natural treasures along the way. Note: We may walk up to a mile, over generally level surfaces. Some surfaces may be muddy or uneven. Please dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear. Pre-registration is required. WHEN: Saturdays, 9 am- 10 am MEETING LOCATION: Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, New Jersey. Meet 5-10 minutes prior to the start of the program. Calling all future naturalists! Join us at the Nature Center of Cape May for a nature-inspired “Grown-up & Me” program. We will read books, explore nature with hands-on sensory activities, and have fun! This program is best suited for children 18 months - 3.5 years old. We will be exploring nature hands-on; children may get wet and/or dirty. Weather permitting, we may spend a portion of this program outside. Please dress accordingly. Registration is required. An adult must accompany children. SCHEDULE: January 6th: Foxes January 13th: River Otters January 20th: Squirrels January 27th: Deer COST: $8 per child (NJA Members), $10 per child (Non-members) MEETING LOCATION: Trucksess Welcome Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, New Jersey. Join us for an exciting exploration of the amazing mammals that share our world! In this hands-on program, young naturalists will discover what makes mammals unique—fur, warm blood, and milk for their babies. In this program we will be: Examining real mammal skulls, pelts, and tracks to become wildlife detectives Playing active games that demonstrate how mammals hunt, hide, and survive Exploring mammal adaptations like hibernation, migration, and camouflage Searching for signs of local mammals on our nature center grounds Whether your child dreams of studying wildlife or simply loves animals, this program will spark curiosity about the mammals living right in our own backyards. Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for these remarkable creatures and how we can help protect them. This family program is suited for children 3+ with parent supervision. Led by Sue Predl, Nature Store Assistant Join Sue for a guided two-mile nature hike to enjoy the trees, birds, and plant life at Scherman Hoffman Nature Sanctuary. The trails we hike will vary, but we can guarantee beautiful views of our sanctuary. Walking time is flexible but will be approximately 2 hours. Please dress for the winter weather and wear sturdy shoes; be prepared to walk on uneven ground and up hills. The hike will go rain or shine. Registration required by 12:00 PM the day of the hike. Learn about different types of shelters built for outdoor survival purposes and build your own using just sticks and leaves! Head outside and join us on the trails to look for signs of wildlife and learn about how animals keep themselves warm in the winter. Participants will then use this knowledge to build their own natural debris shelter that could keep us safe and protected in cold temperatures! This family program is suited for children 3+ with parent supervision. COST: $10 members / $12 nonmembers IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Dress for the weather as we may head outdoors.
