Constellations and Cocoa
Enjoy the natural beauty of the stars at night, learn about the winter constellations, and warm up with a cup of hot cocoa! Visit Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary for this after-dark program all about the stars! We'll be looking up as we learn all about the winter constellations and their myths as we sip on hot cocoa during this family-friendly program. The first part of this event will take place indoors, then we will head outside to observe the stars. Please dress appropriately. This event is weather dependent and will be cancelled if there is rain or cloud cover, participants will be notified of cancellations by 5:00 PM. Join our Stewardship Technician Will to walk the grounds of Scherman Hoffman to clean and prepare our next boxes for the spring. Cleaning old bird nests is a crucial aspect of responsible bird care. While it might seem counterintuitive to remove what appears to be a cozy home, there are several compelling reasons why this practice is essential for the health and well-being of our feathered friends. Old nests can harbor parasites, bacteria, and other harmful organisms that can pose serious threats to future broods. By removing these potential hazards, we create a safer environment for nesting birds and increase the chances of successful breeding in the coming seasons. Additionally, cleaning out old nests helps prevent the accumulation of debris and waste, which can attract unwanted pests and predators. This simple act of maintenance can make a significant difference in the overall ecosystem of your backyard, promoting a healthier and more diverse bird population. NJ Audubon: Saturday Winter Hike
Led by Sue Predl, Nature Store Assistant Join Sue for a guided two-mile nature hike to enjoy the trees, birds, and plant life at Scherman Hoffman Nature Sanctuary on Saturday January 11 and 25. The trails we hike will vary, but we can guarantee beautiful views of our sanctuary. We will hike approximately 2 miles. Walking time is flexible but will be approximately 2 ½ hours. Please dress for the winter weather and wear sturdy shoes; be prepared to walk on uneven ground and up hills. The hike will go rain or shine. We will meet at the Scherman Hoffman Nature Store at 2:00 PM. Registration required by 12:00 PM the day of the hike. COST: free for members, $5 nonmembers. Interested in becoming a member? Led by Dorothy Smullen, Teacher/Naturalist Join a fascinating illustrated program on all aspects of color in nature. Why do animals, plants and fungi look the way they do? Learn about bird feathers, frog skin, octopus camouflage, and historic pigments. Understand the mechanisms of fall leaf color change, bioluminescence, fluorescence, and iridescence.
