Beyond the charming Victorian homes and sandy beaches, Cape May is world famous for its birdwatching, monarch migration, and natural history. Join Cape May Bird Observatory staff and naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. Relax and be entertained in the birding capital of North America! Co-sponsored by New Jersey Audubon's Cape May Bird Observatory and the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities. What treasures does the sea leave behind at the water’s edge? Join us for an hour of beach combing to find out! Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats - the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll scour the shallows, comb the shoreline, and walk along the dunes in search of hidden treasures & signs of wildlife. Along the way, we’ll share some tips and tricks for identifying shells and other beach-inhabiting species! Pre-registration is required. Children may not participate without an adult. Drop in anytime during the 45-minute window — no registration required, come for five minutes or the whole time. Bring the whole family for an hour of nature-based crafting! On the second Saturday of every month, we will guide you through a nature-inspired craft! The whole family is invited to get in on the fun. Each ticket includes crafting supplies for one child. Crafts are best suited for children 6 years of age and older. An enchanting introduction to wild herbal teas! Step into the woods as a forager, not just a hiker. In this hands-on program guests will explore the forest floor and trail edges and learn to spot and safely identify wild plants that have been brewed into teas for generations — things like pine needles, wild mint, clover, etc., depending on the season and location. We'll then head back into the education center for some taste-testing. What to expect: A guided walk to search for edible, tea-worthy plants Simple, memorable rules for foraging safely (only pick what you can positively identify; leave enough for the forest and other foragers) A tasting session — sipping the tea you helped find, with time to talk about flavor, smell, and which plants tasted best Take-home tips and recipes for continuing to forage safely and brew your own teas. Small snacks will be shared, but guests are welcome to bring their favorite snack to pair with their teas. Beyond the charming Victorian homes and sandy beaches, Cape May is world famous for its birdwatching, monarch migration, and natural history. Join Cape May Bird Observatory staff and naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. What treasures does the sea leave behind at the water’s edge? Join us for an hour of beach combing to find out! Explore one of the area’s ever-changing coastal habitats - the beach, ocean, and dunes of Cape May’s “The Cove” beach. We’ll scour the shallows, comb the shoreline, and walk along the dunes in search of hidden treasures & signs of wildlife. Along the way, we’ll share some tips and tricks for identifying shells and other beach-inhabiting species! Pre-registration is required. Children may not participate without an adult. We will survey the morning migrants from the 3rd floor observation deck and then continue onto the trails for a short hike. The length of the hike will depend on bird activity.
