Encounter an incredible diversity of marine life as you help pull a twenty-foot seine net through the shallows of Cape May Harbor. You will learn about the ecology of our coastal waters, and about the fascinating and ancient Horseshoe Crab. A great family outing! Pre-registration is required COST: $12 adults, $6 children ages 3-12, children under 3 free. Limited to groups of up to 20 participants during this time. Join Cape May Bird Observatory naturalists on a trolley tour to local “natural habitats” (with exits at two spots), learning about the beauty, diversity, abundance (millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies pass through each year), geography, and extensive history of this amazing spectacle. Join us at Lorrimer Sanctuary at 8AM on Fridays for a gentle birding stroll around the grounds. Learn how to identify and listen for bird species of all kinds during this hour-long birding program. From May-Oct, we'll walk the trails at Lorrimer Sanctuary looking for birds of all kinds including beautiful migratory warbler species that will only stop in NJ for a short time on their way north. Led by Dorothy Smullen, Teacher/Naturalist, former president of the New Jersey Mycological Association Join Teacher/naturalist Dorothy Smullen for a “talk and walk” to discover the fascinating world of fungi. Fungi have been used for thousands of years by humans, not only as food but as medicine, fire-starters, insect repellants, decoration, for religious ceremonies and more. Fungi are very important to forests. Not only are they decomposers and recyclers in the forest ecosystem, but they also connect to tree roots – a mutualistic symbiosis that might allow trees to communicate with each other. After a talk and display about fungi fun facts, we will walk the trails to look for the diverse groups of mushrooms and fungi. Hand-outs available. One person per ticket. Join the Lorrimer Sanctuary staff for a campfire summer sendoff! We’ll be roasting marshmallows and making s’mores over an open fire while we tell tales of fun at summer camp! We’ll be playing camp favorite games with kids and parents alike, and searching for clues along the trails during our scavenger hunt. Children must be accompanied by an adult, this is not a drop-off program. Join us on Wednesdays from 4-5pm at the Nature Center of Cape May for a 1-hour Monarch Meet-up! Each week, we will explore a Monarch Butterfly-related topic through walks, crafts, activities, and/or stories. This program is designed for all children ages 5-9. Your child will get a chance to examine the life of a monarch butterfly, from their host plants to their magnificent migration! Weekly topics are listed below. Preregistration required.
