Harborside Sketch & Observation Workshop

Slow down and take in the scenery of the Cape May Harbor in the slow sketch session with local artist Cindy Bilbao. We will spend 2 hours sketching the Cape May Harbor without the expectation of creating a perfect piece of art. This class is suitable for beginners through experienced artists. Horseshoe Crabs, Shorebirds, and You!
Cape May Court House Library 30 Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House, NJ, United StatesJoin NCCM staff and naturalists as we partner with the Cape May County Library System for special lectures and workshops! Horseshoe Crabs are an iconic symbol of New Jersey’s beaches. During this presentation, you will learn all about Horseshoe Crab ecology and how they impact countless other species- from shorebirds to fish to humans! Pre-registration requested. Moonlit Horseshoe Crab Walk
Featured Birds Before BeachNature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United StatesGrab your flashlights and get ready to behold an annual spring phenomenon: Horseshoe Crab spawning on the Cape May Harbor! Walk along the shoreline with a Nature Center Naturalist and learn all about Horseshoe Crab ecology and life history. Plus, help this keystone species by flipping them over while listening to the tale of Red Knots, an endangered species lovingly nicknamed the “Moon Bird”. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Children may not participate without an adult. Please bring flashlights (cell phone flashlights work too!). We may walk up to a mile, over generally level surfaces. Some surfaces may be sandy, slippery, or uneven. Please dress for the weather and wear waterproof footwear. This event is great for all ages. Be sure to wear shoes that can get wet, and be prepared for the conditions, including bug spray and sun protection. We will begin the program in the Nature Center’s Aqua Lab before venturing onto the harbor beach to search for horseshoe crabs! PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED COST: FREE Interested in becoming a member? Prong-Set Sea Glass Pendant Workshop
Nature Center of Cape May 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ, United States“Join local artisan, MacLaren of HKM Jewelry, on the Cape May Harbor for a pop-up jewelry workshop at The Nature Center of Cape May! You will learn how to properly select an optimal treasure to work with and create a custom freeform prong setting for it to become a wearable - in just 3 hours! Choose your favorite sea glass or pottery shard from a variety of options provided, or bring your own! Please keep found objects between 3/4" and 1-1/2" as this size is easiest to work with. Basic jewelry making tools and traditional metalsmithing techniques will be covered, all while overlooking the beautiful Harbor of Cape May. Chain options will be for sale after class if desired. Your workshop ticket will include a donation to the NCCM, helping to support its mission to educate and conserve the native ecosystem our community thrives within. No experience is necessary, this is a skill based class and almost anyone can do it! Students must be at least 18 years of age to attend without an adult. Only 10 seats are available so sign up ASAP, as the spots will fill fast! *Please bring your reading glasses to help you see tiny details if you use them, wear sneakers or boots, and tie back long hair for class.
