Fungi have been used for thousands of years by humans, not only as food but as medicine, fire-starters, insect repellants, decoration, for religious ceremonies and more. Fungi are very important to forests. Not only are they decomposers and recyclers in the forest ecosystem, but they also connect to tree roots – a mutualistic symbiosis that might allow trees to communicate with each other. After a talk and display about fungi fun facts, we will walk the trails to look for the diverse groups of mushrooms and fungi. Hand-outs available. One person per ticket. These walks are informal and informative: birds, trees, tracks, wildflowers, reptiles, and amphibians are a few of nature’s wonders waiting for us to discover. The walks are cancelled if there is snow, rain, or weather warnings. Registration required by 4:00 PM the day before the walk. Pre-registration Required. COST: Free for members, $5 nonmembers. Yoga is a great way to relax, connect with yourself, and increase flexibility and strength. Explore the connections between yoga and nature in this 75-minute class. No experience necessary; all levels welcome. For ages 15 years and older. Preregistration is required. There will be no classes 7/6/24 and 8/31/24. Ticket sales end at 4:30 PM on the Friday before each class. You must pre-register, walk-ins will not be allowed to participate. We are offering an in-person class at the sanctuary and a virtual class online simultaneously. The in-person class has a limit of 10 people. Be sure to purchase the correct ticket. Wayrick Wildlife Art Gallery at the Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary
New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary 11 Hardscrabble Road, Bernardsville, NJ, United StatesThis summer, The Wayrick Wildlife Art Gallery at the Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary will feature an exciting new exhibit titled “Windows Into Nature” by local artist David Clair. All sale proceeds from the exhibit will be donated to NJ Audubon. As David relates “Most of the pieces in this show present landscape elements as viewed through abstract windows. The framework is usually done in acrylics and the scenes are some combination of acrylics and collage. The collage elements use magazine papers that have undergone varying degrees of solvent treatment. Using lacquer thinner the printed image can be faded or completely destroyed and the inks quickly worked into the desired texture. In turn, the resulting textures are useful in representing rock formations and foliage in landscapes as well as other textural effects for more abstract work.” David Clair has been painting since the early nineteen sixties. Since his retirement in 1990, he has had more time to pursue his art and has experimented with a variety of collage and mixed media techniques.His work has appeared in shows at the Atrium Gallery in Morristown, the Bernardsville Library, the Morris Arts Gallery, and juried exhibits at the Mountain Art Show, the Somerset Art Association and the Tewksbury Historical Society. “Windows Into Nature” is free and open to the public Wednesday - Sunday throughout the summer. Birds and Butterflies Walk at Six Mile Run State Park
Led by Chris and Paula Williams, Associate Naturalists. Stroll along the park trails with the Williams to look for the birds and butterflies of the park. Please bring your own binoculars.
