Learn how local makers create their work! Create your own masterpiece to take home with you or give as a holiday gift for friends and family. Glass on glass with Tina Giaimo is back again by popular demand and this time we're doing Sea Creatures! Day one we will cut and glue our glass onto glass in a frame & class time can be extended if needed. Your choice of designing a Seahorse, crab, whale or a dolphin and several templates will be provided. Day two it's prep and grout so class time will be shorter. New Jersey Audubon's Muddy Hands Academy - utilizing a Nature Preschool model. A great choice for your 3–6-year old's! *Free to apply! * Looking for a way to add nature learning to your little one's week? Join New Jersey Audubon Staff as we use local phenomena to explore the world around us. Children will spend their time outdoors on the Lorrimer Sanctuary property bouncing between hands-on, inquiry-based activities and free-play to help them develop their own understanding of the natural world. We will use Nature as a guide during this twice weekly program over a period of eight weeks. Lessons will include activities focused on natural history topics, a story and craft, age-appropriate risk taking, all with attention to mindfulness and fun. *NO COST TO APPLY! * Children must be a minimum of 3 to enroll and cannot be older than 6 years old to participate. All children in Muddy Hands Academy must be potty-trained and bathroom independent. The Muddy Hands Academy utilizes a Nature Preschool model with children spending as much time as possible outdoors. Children should be prepared for the weather including wet and muddy conditions. Class sizes are limited to 5 children per session. Peregrine Project Exhibit
For the past year, photographer Wayne Quinto Greenstone has been documenting the Peregrine Falcons that have returned to their historic nesting sites along the Palisades Cliffs, some 500 feet above the Hudson River. His extraordinary images and creative renditions will be on display at the Wayrick Wildlife Art Gallery through January 25, 2023. The Art Gallery is open 9am – 5pm Thu, Fri Sat and 12 noon – 5pm on Sunday. Using fresh evergreens, create a handcrafted wreath, garland and table decorations of distinction that will rival those gracing the pages of expensive specialty catalogs. The process is easy to learn, and even beginners leave with impressive creations. Greenery and wire are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own special decorations. Due to COVID-19-safety protocols this year we strongly recommend you bring your own pruning shears and gloves. Also, please dress warmly as these classes may have to be held outdoors on picnic tables. Masks will be required to be worn during the entire session. Sessions are limited to 12 participants. Looking for a fun way to “spruce” up your home for the season while at the same learning about the importance of evergreens in your backyard? Lorrimer Sanctuary’s staff will teach you the techniques necessary to create a natural wreath that rivals the high-end products you’ve been admiring all season long! In the process you’ll learn to identify common evergreen trees by their leaves and cones, and understand the local ecology of NJ coniferous trees. All participants will go home with a one-of-a-kind, handmade wreath. All materials included in price. At our version of the famous Christmas Markets of Germany (Weihnachtmarkt), we will offer a pop-up sale featuring local Cape May artists and their original, hand-crafted wares. Affordable prices of these unique works of art will be available to participants in our wreath workshops as well as others who stop by for this outdoor “open house”. The fire pit will be roaring to fend off the chill with a hot chocolate station to warm your tummy. Proceeds go directly to support our artist friends who have been so generous to us through volunteering and providing donations to our fundraisers. Join CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. So let us add some joy to your winter – join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding around Cape May Point. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. Harlequins & other sea ducks; plus, loons and gannets. We'll visit some nearby bayside spots after birding the inlet for additional species. Early winter birding for Harlequin Ducks, eiders, and scoters. In some years seabird migration is still underway, and we may also see many gulls, loons and gannets. The beaches may host Horned Larks, Am. Pipits, and/or Snow Buntings. After birding the lighthouse/inlet area, we'll caravan to nearby bayside spots for more species. Join CMBO staff and naturalists on this trip to Barnegat Light State Park! Harlequin Ducks and Purple Sandpipers are guaranteed and over time this trip has yielded Black-legged Kittiwakes, Northern Gannets, all three scoters, both eiders, both white-winged gulls, Razorbills and more. All the latter are only possibilities, and who knows what might turn up this year? We will be walking most of the day. We will take a walk on the long stone jetty near the inlet or along a sandy beach. Our route will depend on the weather on the day of the trip. Time and weather permitting, we may look for Short-eared Owls and other birds at nearby marshes later in the day. This trip involves walking over jetties. We do not set a firm daily schedule in advance, leaving us flexible to maximize birding opportunities, taking advantage of weather conditions, tides, and recent bird sightings. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. Make your own upcycled bird feeders in this in-person DIY workshop! Winter is a critical time for the birds to find food. Make a log suet feeder and a decorative seed feeder from repurposed materials. We’ll have all the ingredients to make your own suet mix for the log feeder and a bonus suet cake to take home. This beautiful park can be great for a wide variety of migrant birds from shorebirds to waders, falcons, thrushes & warblers. One of the This beautiful park can be great for early winter waterfowl, seabirds, and birds of prey. We'll also look for Snow Buntings and Horned Larks. Our focus will be on waterbirds at this beautiful and productive park. We’ll search for a variety of scoters, maybe some eiders, other ducks, loons, grebes, and gulls from various spots overlooking the ocean and Barnegat Bay. Raptors, sparrows, and perhaps some Snow Buntings or even a Lapland Longspur may be present along the beaches. There is a $5 entry fee for NJ residents who do not have a state park pass. NJ Audubon: The Peregrine Project
Presented by Wayne Quinto Greenstone, Photographer Wayne Quinto Greenstone will present The Peregrine Project, a documentation of the return of the Peregrine Falcon. For the past year, Mr. Greenstone has been documenting the Peregrine Falcons that have returned to their historic nesting sites along the Palisades Cliffs, some 500 feet above the Hudson River. This classic tale of human sin and redemption as told by the Peregrine Falcons of the Palisades holds the promise of hope and belief that we can address our current existential threats with the same focus and resolve that returned the Peregrine Falcon from the brink. The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest animal on Earth, capable of reaching speeds over 200 miles per hour when diving upon prey. Yet this master of the skies fell victim to the pesticide DDT, and by the early 1960’s there were no known nesting pairs east of the Mississippi River. As the result of extraordinary human efforts to ban this dreaded poison and raise falcons in captivity for release into the wild, these formidable birds have made an incredible comeback over the past two decades. Join CMBO naturalists for 2 hours of birding around beautiful Cape May Point! Crossbills, siskins, redpolls – oh, my! Winter can be such a special time to bird Cape May Point. Each week we’ll scour the Park or wander the streets to see what avian visitors are calling Cape May Point their winter home. The winter finch prediction sounds promising, the ponds are full of ducks, and loons and scoters are on the move. Our path may take us through the quiet streets of Cape May Point, visiting local feeders. Or maybe we’ll travel along the dunes to check the morning flight line. Lily Lake and the Northwood Center often hold wintering songbirds and, of course, the State Park is always good. So let us add some joy to your winter – join us every Saturday for 2 hours of birding around Cape May Point. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. COST: $8 members, $12 nonmembers. Explore the connections between yoga and nature in this 75-minute class. No experience necessary; all levels welcome. For ages 15 years and older. Preregistration required.
