Birding Cape May Point – February 14, 2026

Leaders: Kathy & Roger Horn, Holly & Mark Lemieux, Bernie Hodgdon

Temp: 34°F

Winds: WSW 5 mph

Weather Conditions: partly sunny

At CMBO, we hate to cancel our scheduled bird walks and hardly ever do so unless there’s a threat of lightning. But we did cancel the last 3 weeks of walks due to not just the extreme cold, but also the dangerous layer of ice on the ground. It was good to be back out today, and we were rewarded for our efforts with a couple of purple finches and a nice variety of ducks. In addition to American Wigeon, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, Greater Scaup and lots of Mallards, Lily Lake is hosting several Redheads and Canvasbacks, in addition to a single American Coot and a Ruddy Duck in almost complete breeding plumage. We didn’t see the Trumpeter Swans but there are quite a few Tundra Swans on Bunker Pond, along with American Black Ducks and Mute Swans. Perhaps unsurprisingly, we didn’t see a single woodcock; most are believed to have perished during the recent cold spell.
