Birding Cape May Point – March 29, 2025

Leaders: Roger Horn, Bernie Hodgdon, Mark Lemieux, Barry Hershfeld

Temp: 60° F

Winds:  SW 16 mph

Weather Conditions: cloudy

A bit breezy today at Cape May Point State Park this AM. Spring is here, and bird migration is picking up. From the Dune crossing we were able to view a stream of Northern Gannets continuing to fly north out of the bay. Red-breasted Mergansers and Red-throated Lions were moving about the ocean as well. A few Black and Surf Scoter zipped by, while American Herring, Great Black-backed, and Ring-billed Gulls moved about on the beach.

The “plover ponds” sported a few Buffleheads, Mallard, and Ring-necked Ducks. The Blue and Yellow trails had the usual cast of Yellow-rumped Warblers, Northern Cardinals and quite a few Tree Swallows. The Red-winged Blackbirds were full of “conkaree” song today. While numbers of Fish Crows and Carolina Wrens sang and called steadily throughout our walk. Golden-crowned Kinglet’s and an Eastern Phoebe moved about in the wooded areas. 37 species. “Not too shabby” despite the steady southwest winds.
