Half Day Fridays at Sandy Hook
Sandy Hook - Lot B Hartshorne Drive, Sandy Hook, NJ, United StatesEarly fall birding at the hook: we may encounter anything from shorebirds and terns to flycatchers, sparrows, and warblers. A wide variety of habitats ensure good bird diversity at one of the state’s best spots. Be prepared for 3-4 hours of walking over flat and sandy surfaces. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. Hilltop Reservation
Hilltop Reservation Courter Ln, North Caldwell, NJ, United StatesExplore edge and meadow habitats for fall migrants with an easy walk through the reservation. Meet in the parking area next to the ball field. We will also explore the restored meadow habitat for Bluebirds as well as butterflies and other insects. Island Beach State Park
NJ, United StatesThis beautiful park can be great for a wide variety of migrant birds from shorebirds to waders, falcons, thrushes & warblers. One of the gems of the state park system, Island Beach has miles of beach, tidal wetlands, maritime forest and thickets that can host a good diversity of birds, especially if the winds are right. There is a $5 entry fee for NJ residents who do not have a state park pass or are 65 years of age or older. Be prepared for several hours of walking on flat terrain, sometimes sandy. Bring lunch. Fall Birding at Hawk Rise Sanctuary
Hawk Rise Sanctuary 1811 Lower Rd, Linden, NJ, United StatesExplore the various habitats at Hawk Rise Sanctuary to look for spring migrants. Join NJ Audubon Program Director Scott Barnes and associate naturalists for a leisurely walk at the sanctuary. We’ll look for woodpeckers, thrushes and warblers in the woods and wetland birds like herons, egrets, and Ospreys along the Rahway River. Island Beach State Park - Park Entrance Median Parking Lot Central Ave, Seaside Park, NJ, United StatesFall migration at this beautiful park; searching for a wide range of species including herons, terns, thrushes, flycatchers, sparrows and warblers. Be prepared for walking on flat terrain with some sandy and muddy spots likely. Bring binoculars, lunch, and dress for the weather. Biting insects like mosquitoes may be present, so long pants are advised. Trip is free but pre-registration is required. Led by Scott Barnes and Linda Mack. Palmyra Cove Birding
Palmyra Cove Nature Park 1335 New Jersey 73, Palmyra, NJ, United StatesWe'll look for a variety of warblers and other songbirds at this productive site along the Delaware River. This productive birding locale can be excellent in fall migration and a wide variety of flycatchers, vireos, sparrows, and warblers may occur. If we’re lucky we might find a Connecticut Warbler. Be prepared for 3-4 hours of walking on flat terrain. Meet in the main parking lot of the park. Led by Scott Barnes and Barbara Bassett.
